Hi Pixeljoint~
So after finishing my last piece I got the urge to animate it. I think its coming along alright so far but I'd like to know what the folks around here think of it :) original: ![]() Previous WIP's (just to see em all lined up is kinda neat to me, heh): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Current WIP: ![]() A few quick notes - -The hair is hair-like but is essentially controlled like another limb, so the original picture isn't as weird as it may seem. -I shrunk it for the animation both because the old one wouldnt fit and because this is much more proportionate to my actual drawings. -She's possessed by a shadow spook thing, so thats why her shadow is flamy..bubbly... stuffhappinings. Also why there's an eye in her "hair burst". -her weapon is a giant tuning fork. -17 (now 18) colors including transparency Thanks in advance :D Edited by Zeratanus - 12 December 2008 at 6:45am |

I like the animation. Because tuning forks vibrate to make its sound some suggested vibration would really kick it up a notch.

Pretty nifty idea :D
Any advice on how to go about suggesting that movement? I can think of a few things but in my head it seems it'd give more of a shake rather than vibration *ponders* Edited by Zeratanus - 14 November 2008 at 2:29pm |

I know that the stuff between her legs is either energy or ground. But somehow something looks very wrong about that.
![]() Add more of that stuff about here, on both sides. |

not sure I understand exactly what you mean. I understand your talking about the shadow, which is giving off energy because she's possessed by a shadow demon, so "energy" fits well enough =P
but add more of it where? around the character in general? sorry, i don't understand completely ![]() *my first attempt at vibration made it look more like a chainsaw ><. back to the drawing board..* |

I like it, a lot. Maybe the knees could bend slighty or something.

I like the shadow and the animationy stuff happening to it. If anything, I would exagerrate that shadow. Make it bigger, and more flamey, so that the fact that her shadow is evil and possesses her is more evident.

Thanks :D
@ Lucas - she's breathing hard but I think bending at the knees would make her seem too tired and weak. @Geminoid - I'll keep that in mind and try to work something up :) bit of an update, but nothing changed with the shadow or vibration: -tie now moves with her head -back arm shading changed a bit -the hair's eye is no longer cut off from stationary hair shadows ![]() Edited by Zeratanus - 14 November 2008 at 3:32pm |

I would think (without testing) that if you make two frames (let's say) where the fork is OVER-AAd with a slight eastward direction on one and west on the other. I'm thinking that the main lineart would only shift one pixel in either direction. The AA (or blur) would create the vibration XF.

@Jalonso - hm. My first attempted at that failed but ill keep at it
@Ravey - Are the colors/outline color really causing a problem? I personally would rather the colors it has now over simplifying them and making the character flatter looking (that and I'm a contrast junky i guess lol). The hair stays though, as its one of the defining parts of the character. Taking it out is a pretty drastic change. Here are some of my drawings of the character I did a bit ago if anyone wants to check out what I'm going off of: Current outfit: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v610/Cheeseathonian/OCWars/nursetwee-fullbody-frontcopy.jpg another outfit, but with the fork: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v610/Cheeseathonian/OCWars/Twee-back-sm.jpg Current animation: ![]() -one of the blues on the shirt/fork are changed -major changes to the fork's lower end to more match the original design -the front hair spike sways a little *wanders off to the internets to study some Tuning Fork vibrations* *edit: whats up with the code to link URL's? in my preview thing it works fine but when i post it they just become text :\ Edit2: ack. theres a stray pixel in there >>. its been taken care of. I am very busy atm, but if I find a few minutes I'll try to make an edit of a vibration frame for you in case it helps to visualize. My brain sees it as a most effective and original visual. I'd love to see it develop successfully.
*Your original colors and coloring might be more work but there is no reason to reduce colors just because it would be easier. We are going for Awesome here ;) Edited by jalonso - 15 November 2008 at 11:11am |

If you could that would be awesome :D. I am indeed having problems visualizing the effect, thus taking stabs in the dark and coming up with nothing decent.
As for the colors, I just took them from my last sprite of the character: ![]() So they could easily not be entirely suited for the newer sprite. While some of the basic colors will not change (I wont make the hair blond for example) I wouldnt be against changing the clothing colors/shading colors and the hair could be edited so long as it doesnt stray too far from the original brownish-purplish color. I've also got a good amount of schoolwork to do so I wont be taking another stab at this until tonight at the earliest. |

Thanks for trying :D I appreciate the effort. And thanks for the image.
I've played around with it a bit at work today (yay for being a graphic designer with photoshop always open and a student worker without a heavy workload!) and I think i have the beginnings of something. I'll keep at it ![]() |

I must agree that works rather well. Maybe more movement at the ends and less as it gets nearer to her, seems even movement now.

been watching her for about a minute now, surprising how she can hold that heavy thing up with one arm =D
looks pretty cool, the vibrating stuff really adds something to it. |

Geeze. I keep trying on this and nothing comes out well =__=;. If it kinda works on light backgrounds it ends up looking like butt on darker ones and visa-versa :\
looking up some videos I do know that they vibrate symmetrically with them going towards and away from each other at the same time but short of that I haven't made any real progress since my last post. Any other tips anyone has that may help? @minipuck - thanks :) and actually normally she can't lift that thing at all. She uses her spook that comes from her shadow to swing it around. She gets stronger when the spook possesses her :B *will try some more later. I refuse to let this thing beat me* |

No doubt this effect is for the very advanced. I just think you can pull it off. Wat you have is not bad. I've never seen anything similar in gameplay. Only some bug flapping wings really come to mind.
Naturally I still fail at making a good edit. I sux at animation anyhow. |

thanks :D
and as I said - i havent given this up yet. Took a break from it from a while though. Coming back to it I decided my previously posted attempt was the best I had (compared to 3 other variants) and finished up the rest of the fork. I'm fairly pleased with it at this point but I'm sure it could be better so any feedback is more than welcome :) ![]() |

Breathing looks unnatural to me and almost makes her look like she is hyperventilating.
Also at the shoulder the movement is weird and makes it look like its dislocating or something. I no that doesn't help much. But they are things to look at that is visibly noticeable Edited by Jim16 - 03 December 2008 at 2:14pm |

Well she's supposed to be breathing laboriously from a fight or some such thing.
I think I see what's wrong with the arm but in fixing it I made the whole bloody 'sword' move Too much movement- yay or nay? ![]() |

i know its wouldnt technically be PA but...
If you isolated the tuning fork, and treated it as a 3 or frame animation and in each frame added a progressively stronger gaussian blur essentially, giving the animation a Sharp to blurry to sharp loop it would give a perfect vibration effect alternatly.... isolating only the forks (not the hilt and handle) and give it a movement of one pixel in either direction, on a diagonal axis uh..i guess left-down and right-up (in addition to the movement of the fork created by the existing movement that is) it would also appear to be vibrating, but may not look as good also alternatly moving each row of pixels (horizzontally) in opposite directions by one pixel would work well too But I like the revision as is as well. it seems to have a Rippling vibration, rather than a uniform and static vibration, which is also cool not sure if anything ive said will make sense to anyone other then me, but i figured id throw it out there |

You could also do the gaussian blur thing, see how it looks, and redo it as PA. Would be harder to do but may work.

Thanks for the input you three :D
here it is with alternating between gaussian blur and motion blur. obviously its not PA anymore but I do think i should try AAing the inside of the blade now. Ill give skooba-dude's idea a shot a bit later. got a meeting to go to :B ![]() |

ugh! I'm getting weary of trying to pull off this bloody effect. I tried to have it send out little 'vibration waves' things but that only works on a fairly dark background. So that's been scrapped and I'm trying to stick with this older effect.
-inner lines now are kinda AA'd -vibration has a bit more of an upward flow now -vibration lines added to the shaded areas too. -arm has been changed so its less awkward. still not as I'd like it but that's it so far. ![]() Edited by Zeratanus - 09 December 2008 at 3:20pm |

that, or you could try to take the black outline away form the fork and use the cyan and the gray to simulate the blurryness inthe blade.
![]() something like this, but made with care and detail.(and by detail i mean detail not saturate it with little unnecesary lines) |

Just my 2 cents, but aren't the forks of the tuning fork moving from left to right when struck? Instead of moving from top to bottom...

![]() What a headpain. Looming finals dont help either >> Thanks for the input again folks. Metaru that looks good, but it's missing something... heck if I know what though. Still have a few more things to try but right now I'm gonna just try to lighten up the waves in the last one so it looks less "accordion like" as the member of another forum put it. Edit: Here's a 'single pulse' version. Its not as busy as the others which I like but its not the most realistic either (not to imply the older one was). I think it looks alright myself but I donno... what do you guys think? ![]() Edited by Zeratanus - 11 December 2008 at 2:51pm |

honestly i dont believe he fork needs to be animated at all. you're lacking frames and framerate to do the fluent animation it requires so it wont look so choppy and flaccid. In the end it doesnt really add anything to the character but instead distracts the attention from the character(wich is the main focus) towards the fork. the static fork version is ok, and i'd suggest stay with that instead of trying to fit an animation that is going to be a pain in the ass to be credible(and probably still wont be)
also i have my doubts about his way to hold the fork. |

Ever heard of subpixel animation? it might work better for what you want, unfortunately I have no knowledge of this way of pixeling that will help directly, but I have seen others do it. So yeah...look it up :)

Subpixel animation? Shoot, looked that up and it sounds crazy. working with the RGB lights in monitors? Granted I didn't find any real site telling me HOW to do it, but eh, I'll leave that until later lol.
Anywho, I've think I've finished with this piece as far as my brain's willing to go and I'll be submitting it to the gallery (A bit more touched up than it is here). It's been 2 days shy of a month already. I'll definitely revisit this when I get some more expirence under my belt though. Thank you all for all your help ![]() |
