Ok, so I went back and revised my old 'shadow mage' piece.

Old version:

New version:

And it was sent back with the...
REASON: Your piece was not able to gather the score needed for inclusion in the gallery.

Since it wasn't the "doesn't meet quality standards" or any of the other ones, that means it got sent back based on the number of 'no' votes.

Thing is, it was sent back pretty fast. So that means it kept the old votes.

I'm guessing I'm going to have to delete it and re-submit it fresh, instead of edit re-submitting.

My suggestion for future PJ upgrades: Fiddle with the queue so that when a piece is re-submitted, it resets all the votes.

I am moving this to the WIP section where it belongs.

To be honest, both pieces appear haphazardly made and can be easily improved. Without trying to sound mean, I think you spend more time in the chatterbox than trying to learn ways to better your art. I am consistently amazed when things like this get approved and people turn a blind eye just because you hold alot of character and are well liked (hey, I like ya too!).

So, I implore you to learn something: anatomy, style, form, colour, techniques, whatever... just evolve and learn from your peers and this site as many others do.

Alrighty, it looks like this is a WIP topic now. Guess it's time for C&C then.

Well I actually think that the new one is crap! no offence.

The old one represents form and so on, where as the new one is but ugly....reminds me of something other than my face.

If your going to go for the style you have in the knew one, then please! FIX THOSE JAGGIES!!!

Oh and why did the last one need revision?.
Anyways dude. I agree with Mr Blink there.

Except for the bubble animation, I really dislike it

It's waaaaay more pixel arty than your first attempt, till you need to do something with him.

So, first his stance. His skirt? is really weird and shapeless. Why not make it less wide, and do some more with it than just 2 straight lines?

His left arm, carrying the sword is really weird too. His upper arm is too large, and it just does not have the shape op an arm.
His right is better, but its connected to some space below his neck, not to his shoulder. If you move it a tiny bit to the left it should be better I guess.

Now for the colors.

You could keep on experimenting like this, or you could try to make something more traditional, but that will become good for sure.
Give the man some color and volume, and when the glow comes, let the glow shine realistic on him, not the way it looks now (because of the black line between the outer and the inner glow). Remember that logically seen the glowing is everywhere, also on the front and the back of him.

With the glow over his head the shape of his head looks really not smooth.
Oh and you already have dark green, use it to aa, to add detail, and a lot of other things to make this image attractive!

I am sure you can make more, than just funny time consuming animations!

Jim, the first one needed revision because it was labeled NPA.

Lollige, his hand isn't carrying the sword, it is the sword. Color and volume is going to be a bit difficult.

I guess that's the thing about WIPs, sometimes an explanation is needed as the original artist's concept might be different from what the viewers perceive. Ok, here's a little explanation so that I can get the most out of the C&C.

  • The man is a shadow, based on the Dragon Warrior monster.
  • Surrounded by pitch black darkness.
  • His right hand is based on nightmare's. But instead of holding the sword, it extends and morphs into it.
  • Trying to keep this just 2 colors, black and green.
  • Trying to keep it 64x64, so I can use as an avatar in the future.
Alright people. Lay it on me.

You already are using 3 colors.. Let me make a quick edit on what I would do.

EDIT: It contains at least 4 colors, and your gif image is sort of broken, thats why I have to edit a screenshot now.

EDIT2:

I wasn't counting shades when I said '2 colors', a darker green is still a green color. Guess I should have said 'monochromatic' instead.

And how is my gif broken? And why does your edit have nipples?

I guess nipples turns him on
The gif is not bad, but it could be better. The sword could have a more sword like shape and some places the lines looks weird compared to the rest.
I do like the bubbly bubbles a lot though =B

I liked the nipples, mine is female now :)

Oh and Graphicsgale said there was no palette entry, MTpaint and Imageready just crashed, when I tried to open your image.

Alright I didn't read the whole thread but here's what I think:

"A shadow in pitch black darkness"  sounds like an excuse worthy of glass of milk in a snowstorm.   Lame.    I agree with whoever said this above - you really need to start practicing anatomy and form and create an environment and mood in your pieces.  These basic animated icon things are boring and rather crappy :(

Take it further!  Forget your color limit for now, and don't animate it for now, and really push the form of the guy... if he's glowing in complete darkness well then it's not complete darkness anymore is it?

Git! I'm expecting lots from you.   I agree with PB here, you're a cool guy and everyone likes you, but you're not improving all that much...  So from a community that <3s you, consider this a gentle but firm kick in the right direction ^____^

@Lollige, yeah... um, all those newfangled tools you're using have a grudge against my old skool (cheap ass) MSpaint and unFreeze.

@leel, I'm loved. Mega-uber-wootness! :D

You know, you're right. I've been doing some thinking, and I think I realized what my problem with this piece is: The original idea for making an avatar of a mage submerged in pitch black darkness was something me and my friends came up with when we made our site. But the site's been dead for a few years and I've since lost contact with most of those friends. So the very idea of the shadowmage carries sentimental value to me. It's what's keeping me so stubborn about changing it too much.

I know what I have to do now. I have to make a NEW mage. One completely susceptible to 360 degrees of change.

*points finger in the air* Back to the drawing board! :D

He might still going to be a mage. He might still be in the darkness. But it's going to be brand spaking new. Just for PJ. ^_^

Well it can still be a shadow dude in darkness... but there are more interesting ways to show that than outlining him on a black canvas.

Start a wip so we could have something solid to crit, but remember - colors depends on what they're surrounde by - you dont need to use pure black to show night or... like.. pure yellow to show the sun...  You know what I mean.

Also think more about the guy - what is he?  Is he human with magical powers?  is he like ... made of smoke or something?   Does he have legs?  What is he wearing?   You might already have all the answers to this, but neither of your versions right now show us the answers.

If I end up using any, sure. If I pull this stuff out of my head, that's going to be a bit tough.

Hopefully I'll have a half decent WIP by this evening. :D

Pulling it outta your head shouldn't be an option 'till you're as good as fool.

REFERENCEREFERENCEREFERENCE.

Yes and no. If you don't pull anything out of your head, then you'll just be 'that guy who reproduces the Mona Lisa'.

Regardless of skill level, there's has to be some originality. But yeah, I see your point there.

You don't have to recreate!

I can watch cheese while drawing a boat, and still it will be useful!

Not DIRECTREFERENCE DIRECTREFERENCE DIRECTREFERENCE.

REFERENCE REFERENCE REFERENCE.

Direct reference is looking at a picture and copying it. Trying to remake the mona lisa, as it were. Often frowned upon, but it actually has its educational merits. I promise you, there's no better way to study a piece than to attempt to recreate it.

Reference is getting 6 pictures of people that look like the mona lisa, 6 pictures of clothing similar to what the mona lisa is wearing, 4 pictures of gloomy backgrounds and trying to recreate the mona lisa... rotated 3/4s. Instead of copying something exactly, you strive to understand the elements in the picture and recreate them in a scene of your own devising.

The idea comes out of your head, but use reference. So for your idea, obvious references would be fire, cloaks, and ethereal things. Mages, radioactive glow... the list goes on.

(P.S. stop checking the forums and get to work!!! <3)

And yes, I probably should stop being so chatter and get back to work.
