Hey All,

I'm wondering what any of you would charge for some touch up work.

Essentially some colleges and myself are making a Golden Axe tribute/parody brawler for our college senior project, to enter in the Dream, Build, Play competition and to eventually post onto the Xbox's community games channel. Unfortunately, only one of us has prior art experience and she is a bit overwhelmed with her medical classes to perform both spriteing and backgrounds. So, I have been doing the sprites thus far and admittedly lack talent. My position is writer/project manager, so it's not really my job to begin with
We have our engine working and everything is syncing together well with my sprites, but I feel that they could use some serious polish. So essentially we have 3 main characters to have polished. We are looking at a resolution of 42 by 54 with about 49 to 60 frames per character. Our game design document is written to take place over a span of 7 episodes. Our goal for the competition in August is to have finished episode one.

Our immediate need is for the retouches on the 3 main characters and if I could get a quote for them that would be great.  I am working full time and have money set aside for this project.  I don't have a problem with paying an hourly rate, I just need to know how long you think doing such small sprites would take.  Currently they are drawn with 13  individual colors and are at around 42 by 54 resolution.  We were matching the sega genesis' resolution from Golden Axe. If you feel you need to enlarge it that's fine, we chose that size to be simplistic and allow a quicker work flow and to mask my own inabilities as a sprite artist.
Signed,
William A. McDonald

Do you have a set palette for the game yet? And about how many frames to each of the three characters have/expected to have?
I can do a lot of things, I just never bother to do most of them.

Well Rose, the female character contains a total of 59 frames.

Bolax contains 47 frames.

Kobold Commander contains 24 frames.

Each character is constructed with a specific pallet.  However the game itself doesn't have a set pallet.  The characters range from 13 to I believe 32 colors, although this number can be decreased or increased at the touch up artists discretion.  Hardware limitations aren't an issue, it's more of whatever you find easiest/quickest to work with.  You have a lot of creative freedom with the touchups, do what you think is necessary to make them look acceptable.  Redraw, reshade, resize whatever you feel is necessary.
