I'm planning on making a horizontally-scrolling shoot-em-up this summer (or at least getting an engine programmed), but I'm having trouble with the graphics.  I can't get the player ship to look right.
 
Any tips?

Yes.

Show us what you have drawn, and spend some more time on it. We can not blindly put you in the right direction because there are too many directions for that. Create something, put it in the WIP forum and we can continue.

Btw, funny enough I am doing exactly the same atm. Planning on making a horizontally scrolling shmup, getting finished this summer xD
