This is something I haven't heard at all from pixel artists... what is your view on using a palette that isn't your own? I personally, specially since I'm still learning and "sharpening my skills" haha, I come up with my own colors. But also, I have other palettes that I have collected and I have made sprites with them, for example, I have the Commodore 64 one, and the Nes one too.
I wouldn't go on and grab a palette from another pixel artists, unless I actually ask him/her for permission (this never happened before since I never asked anyone yet)... what about you, how do you see this? would you let someone borrow your palette? would you get pissed if someone used your palette without your concern? what about using palette from games other than for specific pixel joint contests? Share, and elaborate as much detailed as you can. Thanks |

You don't need permission to use other people's palettes. Or even artistic style.

I don't think there's anything wrong with borrowing a color palette.

When I've used someone else's trademark style or palette I like to credit them, mainly so that whoever sees my work will get the pleasure of viewing the fair superior efforts of the artist who inspires me.
I think another point to make would be how you use the colours. If, for example, you eye drop someone's pixel art of lets say... a bear, and you use those colours to pixel you're own bear then you aren't being particularly creative. Sometimes it's good to appropriate the palette to an entirely new concept. That's my two cents. |

I agree with you. If I borrow someone's palette I'll credit them for the palette selection, of course given that it is originally compiled by them, as in mixing numbers and through experimentation. I think it's more a moral thing to do lol... but you never know, some people might actually get pissed if they see your art, download it and then find out that the colors palette is the same.
Lol, not me, but them though... ![]() |

I palette-steal like there's no tomorrow.
That, and MS Paint defaults. |

Oh man... why MS paint defaults?
![]() Also, stealing palettes and using other ones can help a lot when it comes to selection of colors, or coming out with your own colors later on. |

Interesting... I once googled for color palettes, but all I found was a lot of other stuff for photoshop, etc... I'll bookmark that.

Sometimes someones palette can inspire you to create. I see no problems with this.

it can take as much time and creativity to create a really good palette as it does any other element of artwork. nothing wrong with inspiration, but I'd definitely credit someone if I used their palette, I don't see how it'd be anything other than theft if you didn't.

I think it is normal to borrow palettes to other people as long as you do not give credit to your name because remember you just borrowed it. ![]() |

I just be like hey, I came up with them or I just used the color palette from this game or artist (games since I never take colors from other artists aside from this one guy I have been studying his works haha). |

It is a good decision not to tell them that you created it. Just leave it as a mystery. ![]() Btw, "don't claim as your own if you didn't make it" %100 percent true ![]() |

I totally agree with the mystery part, back then when I used to be a complete newb I used to give too much info, which instead of people using that for educational purposes, they judged me for it ahahahhaa... so yeah, that's one of some of the other reasons why I make people figure it out most of the time. :P |

Another link. This was posted on a forum somewhere, possibly here or at Pixellation.
Borrowing palettes looks OK, but. As TINC said, some artists may have come up with a palette which is really, I mean really theirs, through a lot of work and time, and is an essential part of their style. Looks fine if you want to try it, as a tribute and with due credit, but using it on a regular basis, even with credit, that doesn't seem so cool. Edited by Manupix - 11 August 2009 at 6:47am |

Well it gets a little different when it comes to borrowing colors from other artists... the palettes that aren't mine that I use often are taken from commercial videogames... also, remember that adapting to using new palettes, specially made by other people takes a little bit of time and observation of their works. I agree though, the moral thing to do would be to give credit, but it's not enforced... |

Ive studied other peoples colors and how to use em. But never actually used another artist's palette (maybe when I started, but i dont remember any). I really would feel kinda uneasy spriting something with other people's colors, and I would be really pissed i I find out someone else is using my colors withouth having the minimal decency of crediting me (but, I dont think much people is interesed in my palletes) I actually dont even have my "own palette", i always change it and experiment with it so I dont have a specific one. Ive got a lot to learn. Plus, I sprite on Paint and i have to open my older sprites in order to start a new one with my old colors X.x kinda annoying, but i got used to it and now i cant use any other program. |
