i dont have problems with this piece, but i might be able to improve it :) here it is:
its an asteroid field which became stuck between two suns, so its frozen in space.
a version with more layers: http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/1503/mockup.gif

2 suns should mean 2 lightsources, that should look a lot more interesting (shade-wise) then it does now... but is a very cool idea.

not sure if you want the physics of an asteroid belt or not..
But, there'd be a lot more bigger asteroids than smaller ones. Accretion is the name for the process i believe. Not sure whether two suns would make the asteroid belt freeze, maybe so if the forces are sound. I like the idea anyway :D |

its not necessarily two suns, but two big gravity sources.
the original idea was a military base mid-space that is not a big ship.
so a military asteroid idea came up.
and physics is not bothering me :)

space opera ftw.
then why not make it a rogue planetoide. if i recall corectly that that would be a very large asteroid not gravitationally bound to any sun, just hanging around in deadspace... maybe floating a bit. i thinkt the turrets could use some darker tones and i think you can roughen up the edges of your asteroids |

I don't know about quakes suggestion.
I really think you should look at the game 'Tyrian'. (Man, I love that game.) It seems extremely similar to what you're going for, it has many alien-interior like levels, but also features much outside/space/asteroid-filled levels, and such. Quick Google refs: ![]() ![]() ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UHBXinw1Mc&feature=related Sorry, some aren't in pixel-level quality. I still have the CD, so I might be able to take some nice screens for you. Make sure to watch the video, I think that comes closest to what you're looking for. thank guys :)
@quake and dr d: thank for the interesting refs.
but the asteroid field is frozen in space, so there are much, much less asteroids bumping in too each other, so the texture is much more smoother.
@jalonso: thanx :D
but i love the dome :) th shading on the dome is not done, just tested colors. Edited by Walrus - 30 May 2009 at 8:45am |

I assume you plan on shading the buildings more, but incase you weren't they look really flat.
[I like the tube/pipe things running between asteroids, though wouldn't they be a little looser or flexible (or something) due to the problen that the asteroids are bound to moving a little? I feel like I'm nagging about realism, but It's just one of those things that rubbs my nerves. You could try something like those AC ducts or flexible drain pipes.] < don't take this to heart, I couldn't do anything as well as this looks like it will turn out. :)
