I sprite some. I've also been asked to join projects to sprite for them. I've been involved in a few projects too. However I've also been offered paid jobs always asking me what my prices are. Considering that I've always just volunteered I have no freakin' idea how much I would charge.
I can easily spend hours and hours on a single sprite. I'm not the fastest worker but I like my stuff and other people apparently do too since they're willing to pay. But how much should I charge? http://codegeorge.deviantart.com/art/Robo-Sprite-Chrono-Trigger-100113890 My Deviant Art has a few examples of my work. Most of them very old (older then when I submitted them by far). All of 'em on there are fan sprites. Is there any real money to be made? I mean in somewhat realistic amounts. Not like $10 for a day's worth of spriting. Sorry if this is in the wrong area. |

depends on amount of hours you expect a project to take. times that by your hourly rate and you've got your figure. hourly rate depends upon skill level and experience. 10 for a day's worth means either you're really slow or they're really poor.

What's the average hourly rate around these parts?
How much work would someone on average expect to get done in say 6 hours or whatever? I've got no basis of comparison. I picked up spriting when I tried out for it years ago in a small MMO. Even though I never sprited before I got in and soon became the head spriter. But I've never dealt with non-voluntary work which goes at the pace that the volunteers feel like. Can I get a few examples showing the amount of work done, quality of the work, time spent on the work and amount paid? I'm really lost here. |

Most typically pay per piece, not by the hour. It's very difficult to monitor hours worked across the internet. ;)

Well can someone give me an example of a piece of work and how much they got paid?
I have no frame of reference here. I only know how I've worked and even when I was the head sprite guy for a small MMO I didn't keep track of hours or anything since we were all volunteers. I wouldn't know to charge $10 or $100. (though for my first jobs I'd charge less anyways). |

never said you get paid by the hour. i said that's how you find the price figure of a project.
Like I said, it all depends on if you're new to the field, what your skill level is, how quickly you work, etc etc; there isn't really a "norm" that I know of. |

Well here's a question. How long do you think it took me to make this Snorlax sprite made in the same style as the Pokemon games:

It would probably take me around 2-4 hours. Depends on references. Yes.. I'm slow.
I can't approximate for you, because I have no idea how you work. If someone decides to pay by the hour, it's always good to give them an estimate of how much time you think each piece will take beforehand, to be fair. |

30 bucks maybe. depends on what they're willing to pay and you're willing to work for.

It probably took me 2-3 hours of real work. I take a lot of breaks but sadly I cannot charge for breaks. With breaks it would be like 6 hours. I love me breaks
![]() Hmmmm... I didn't know people were willing to pay anything beyond like a buck a sprite. Well outside of professional big company hires though. |

i mean, if you're just starting out in the biz it could always be lower, or my price guess may be too high in general. but a hell of a lot more than a buck, yes.

I guess it would be fair for you to charge about 15 bucks on that one... But if you are not sure if its worth that much you can always charge less.

Which brings up another question... Say someone wants to pay me for making sprites for a franchise they don't own.
I made that Snorlax for free for someone'e project (along with several other Pokemon). Lets pretend that they wanted to pay. I live in the US. Does that fall under fair use even if their fangame might not fall under it itself? Or am I limited to non-fangame sprites? |

Well I would say logically you're limited to non-fangame sprites, that is if you want money for what you do. If you make any sort of money at all from anything copywrited then you're breaking the law.

I know I couldn't charge for copyrighted stuff but could I still put my custom Snorlax and other copyrighted stuff into my Public Portfolio basically using them as proof that I can sprite.
