Pixel Joint Forum: Color Blind Problem

   I'm just starting pixel art and I've been having some difficulties due to the fact that I am color blind (not totally blind, but green minus) for shading with the good colors and finding the appropriate colors for what I'm trying to do. 

I've been using the Color Sample tool (I think it's the right name) for some of my creations, but it's been quite hard to find the appropriate colors on google. Plus, it gets in the way of letting my imagination go wild and create stuff of my own.

Some friends told me to try doing some 'Color Blind Art' by putting the colors that looks good to my own eye to make it more unique. But I'm afraid that it wouldn't please the viewers.

I'd like some advices, tips from other color blind pixel artists (or just any other with a good heart) and some comments about my friend's idea.

	I am slightly color blind as well. Cant see some tones of green and brown correctly. Usually I show my stuff to other people before putting it anywhere and if they think there is something wrong, I try to fix it. One thing that helps is knowing the RGB value of the things. When I dont know if something is green or brown, I open it on photoshop and check the colors: Green will have low Red and Blue, with more Green, while brown usually has the same, or similar amounts of Red and Green. You could try doing the same thing on your stuff. Checking which colors you cant see, and learning to see them by looking at the RGB numbers. Works for me :P

	I really like your friend's advice. I think that'd be extremely interesting to try at least once. As long as you can detect luminosity accurately you should be able to create reasonably workable palettes after a bit of practice. Other than that, you could do grayscale or 1-bit work. This isn't as dull as it sounds; look at what can be done with just two colors: (by FrankieSmileShow; gallery link here As long as your dark pixel color stays darker than your light pixel color, it makes almost no difference what hue they are.

	thanks lucas for the hint. I'll try what hatch told me first, and if it works, i'll stick to it. If not, i'll use your trick. If any other member wants to add more stuff here to help me out, i'll take whatever i can get. If any of you know some tutorials about 1-bit pixel art, i'd like it. 	I think it'd be cool to see what looks good with your eyes. I can't promise you'll make good art, but it would be interesting to see you explore that. Or you could try using preset palettes (there are some floating around on pixel forums made by other people here and there are color sites like colourlovers though i can't find a link to it at the moment) when you want to make things look normal to the rest of us. It's up to you where you go from here, there are plenty of people here who did something crazy with colors that the rest of us would never try, and got great results. So try whatever interests you, we'll help guide you along :)

	You could do 1 bit like the other person said. Or or just pixel with it. My friend who is good at art is also colour blind. Do that colour blind art thing.
