I hope this is the appropriate forum so if it's not, be gentle... ;)

I've been developing a couple of casual games with the ultimate goal of publishing them. These games are going to require sprite based graphics. I'm no artist so naturally I would need to pay somebody to create the graphics I need.

I'm wondering approximately what kind of cost I would be looking at. I assume that a pay-per-frame type contract is the norm but I've never paid an artist before.

Thanks for taking the time to read my message!

Alot has to do with quality of the art and the amount of art you need done. Those are the first things you're going to need to cover first.
For every second spent wondering if you can do something, you could spend 2 seconds doing it.

Garage Inc. said it all. Well truth is...  it's rare to find someone who will work for you to get paid by the job done, usually the pixel artist(s) get paid by the hour... which is something that can be monitored over the internet (which some employers say it's not possible *psht*) so that depends how much you pay depending on the quality of the work, etc... checking portfolios and or sample galleries is a must if you are going serious.

Thanks for the tips. I suppose that's something that would have to be worked out with individual artists. I was mostly wondering what an average rate would be but it would seem that it's very much depending on who I contract to create artwork.

Thanks again!

a few tips here to get good responses:

-show what you have made, if you can show some (near)finished games that will instill trust in people.
-give an accurate description of the projects. not just the technical side (how many frames, how big, how many characters etc) but also the storyline and gameplay, this will get people more mentally involved.

as for an average rate, there really isn't any.
if you go to people that do this for a living, be prepared to lay down 35-50 or so dollars per hour. they dont only have to get their income but also pay company taxes and loads of bullocks.
if you find a hobbyist i think you'd be looking more towards 10-15 or so.
don't kill me on these numbers =P
