Well I have seen that some people here are into making games, but as in developing the engine from scratch and everything... but I'm not really sure so I'm asking out of curiosity if anyone is into making games with pre-made engines like the Rpgmaker series for PC (RM2k3, XP, VX), Mugen and or 2D fighter maker 2002 (Fighting), Open BOR (Beat-em-up), and or Game maker??
I like all the above and I use them a lot... been doing this for a while now (since 2001 - till now lol)... most of my pixel art goes to games I'm making in those engines and now I'm also doing some free-with-attribution graphics for people to use with those programs... what about you, are you into game making at all or into using any of these programs? |

Greets. :)
I've been into game creation for ages now. I even wrote a pretty solid side scrolling platformer engine back in the day (500+ sprites on screen at once on a 400mhz machine). I've also used RM2k3 and RMXP pretty extensively in the past. Shameless plug: If you're creating CC-licensed art (CC-BY or CC-BY-SA), you might consider archiving it on my website: http://opengameart.org In fact, if it's too much of a hassle, you could zip it all up and I could upload it myself. :) Peace, Bart |

Haha funny you commented man... I just recently retired from the RM scene in overall, I don't go to forums, nor any of that... I only use rpgmaker, cause I have projects pending I must finish, and that I'm doing art for lol... other than that, I'm kinda staying away from the whole developing thing, and trying hardcore to become a pro in pixel art.
I will be doing some public sprites for people to use in rpgmaker and stuff, they will be hosted on my site though, but once I start getting some good stuff done, I might share them in other sites, so I'll let you know when I get to that haha. And well, yeah I used all the makers haha... a lot, since back in 2001 until this summer. In fact, I have a project in each maker ![]() ![]() |

Game Maker is not a pre-made engine and I've been using it to create games since 2005.
Also started learning C++ this year. |

I still consider it a premade engine though. But that's just my opinion.
...for facts, you might wanna look it up on wikipedia. ![]() http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Maker |

Heh, im actually working on a game with Game Maker :). I wouldnt really count it as pre-made or at least if it is, it can be very complicated for a "pre-made", and i thought those were meant to be simple :p. |

For experienced users, Game Maker contains a built-in programming language called the Game Maker Language
GML is an interpreted programming language.. Why do people think that GM is only for newbies? You can make a very good game with it if you know GML well. D&D sucks though |

None of that makes it not a pre-made engine. You're still standing on about a dozen layers of abstraction.

Well, at least you can't compare it to RPG maker and stuff like that.

Problem is... a premade engine is something that is pre-made lol... despite how hard it is or how capable it is. Where do you leave rpgmaker XP and VX? where you can also make complex games and systems through RGSS scripting?
lol, well... yeah man... it's a premade engine... openbor, mugen, rpgmaker, game maker, multimedia fusion 2, all those programs are pre-made engines. |

Game maker is a premade engine, but it wasn't made for anything specific in mind, like rpg maker (Rpgs) or 2D fighter maker (2D fighter), etc.

I still recommend GM for everything else that has nothing to do with fighting / rpgs / beatemup games... |

I use game maker but i also know my share of visual basic. I don't bother with much of the in-built stuff on game maker other than the create objects and rooms, etc. The rest i script in GML.

I always wanted to make a game :]
To accomplish that I need to get decent at pixel art I thought, since I want my custom graphics and all that stuff. Right now, I'm using game maker, but I don't know though. PS: One question, are Multimedia Fusion or Construct better for platformers? |

You can call me Twirly (more like Surly :|)

I'm heavily into C++, but I've also used game maker, games factory and klik and play in the past.
I like C++ because it gives me flexibility, but it comes with the downside of being incredibly slow to make games in (from scratch). Game Maker and other "pre-made" programs give you a nice base to start building a game on, and that's very cool ![]() |

anyone wanting to get further in making games, learn how to use flash, there's actually a big market for that
edit: I'm not dissing any of the other programs like game maker etc. it's just that flash is a very common thing for companies to make viral games with, plus it'll give you easy access to web design jobs etc. Edited by snader - 03 September 2009 at 4:15pm |

Gamemaker was my thing for a while when I was younger, but then I realized how limited it was, NOW I realize that actionscript looks as if you've pounded your head on the keyboard, and I can't find a good java tutorial (and RPG maker wouldn't load for me.)

For Downloadable games, nothing is easier / faster. But Snader I was going to make the suggestion about Flash as well. Flash is incredibly easy to use and can be applied to create lots of games. |

I'm kinda sort of making a game on an RPG engine. The engine is called OHRRPGCE, and it stands for "Official Hamster Republic Role Playing Game Engine". It's mainly for low-bit games and it's kinda limited, but it still has an (optional) programming language called HamsterSpeak, of which I'm trying to learn a little.

Yeah Paul Eres, aka RinkuHero on many forums, and his teams have used this engine. He ended up switching over to Game Maker. Perhaps you should ask him about the benefits / negatives about using that engine... |
