If you could watch this youtube video I made really quick, I would appreciate it. It shows how I did the animation. I used nothing but the pencil tool.Sorry, if I'm being a pain. I just don't understand how using nothing but the pencil tool somehow is not pixel art. By eraser I mean I use white.
The video might be a bit blurry because it's still processing. Edited by architectus - 13 September 2009 at 5:55pm |

From what I've read on here opacity is a hotly contested topic on here.
I personally don't mind if you use semi transparency, as long as it's done by hand, (ie, no blur/smudge/autoAA) Because if you are still placing 'pixel by pixel' and have the control over the opacity, it still seems pure to me. I might be in the minority on this though. |

That's what I did. I used the pencil tool set to about 30 percent opacity. I show exactly what I did in the video. It's HD now that it finished processing.
I'm hoping the ones who approve submissions don't see a problem with my style. If they do, I at least hope they will let me keep the exploding eye alien as an icon. That's the only reason I made it.

I'm still waiting on an answer from the mods why my alien animation was rejected, considering i used nothing but the pencil tool. I even showed my process in the video. If you'd like, I can do a record myself doing a full frame using nothing but the pencil tool.
I would also like to know why my account was changed so I can't post images. :( Did I do something wrong? I got no messages from anyone saying so.
Thanks. Edited by architectus - 14 September 2009 at 5:47pm |

Generally they're pretty okay with opacity, as long as it's not used in the way you did.
They're typically pretty cool with layering stuff like shadows over the image to add depth (they generally only give you a slap on the wrist and let the piece through). However, your use auto-AAed the pixels. Perhaps if you used opacity to get the shades that AA into white then placed them by hand, you'd be fine. However, your use simply builds differing levels of red onto each other creating a spectrum of colors. Pixel art is all about palette conservation and pixel-by-pixel control. The method you employed involves neither. Most of the shades are very close and could easily be replace with two or three colors max. The AA is also auto-placed as you're simply stacking colors on top of each other to create a smoother transition. Tl;dr - Your method kinda' broke some pixeling rules. Even if you manage to perfectly defend your technique and make it seem perfectly fair, they still have the right to kick it out of the gallery. |
