I've been playing with limited colours/ space and came up with this, which I think looks ok so far;



But... I have no idea how to do the face/ hair area. Any tips/ advice?

The face to me is very style oriented.  I would suggest browsing the gallery here.
 
As for the hair, I found this tutorial helpful....
