So far it looks kinda windows 2000 error message box instead of an actual border of a polaroid. Hope my criticism helps. |

Sorry, can't be smaller; your submission should have the exact same canvas size as the template. The actual photograph part of the template should be the same size too.
I'll get back to you about changing the border colours though. Anyway, don't worry about the border for now, the main part is the actual photograph area. |

Seriously, why do you always rush your pieces like this for the challenges... It feels totally unfinished... :(
Also I might not put a speech bubble into a polaroid like that, but I guess that's the artist's decision. |

Everything else is fine for the most part. |

Things have started to calm down from last week, and I really want to give this contest a go.
So here is my preliminary sketch: The Zombie Myspace Camera Whore
It is too big, but I plan to finish her and then crop it to fit the picture size, much the way a real photo works >.> [E][E2] [E3] Went looking for a good palette. Started looking through pictures of gangrene... If you have a weak stomach, like me, I suggest you don't click these links. I just thought they may be helpful for anyone trying to do rotting flesh... As we're in a zombie contest. Gangrene One Gangrene Two Gangrene Three and Four And these are the palettes I pulled from the images, as a base point for my colours:

Got started on colouring/shading today...
I don't think I'm doing all that great by the standards of the people I look up too, but for me, this is a vast improvement, I think:
The light, like in orenshtiv's, is coming from the camera flash. [E] Moar shading, to the skull, under arm, neck. Edited by ekobor - 28 October 2009 at 1:12pm |

@Manu~
Yush, I remember~
In fact I just cropped it to see how it would fit, and see what kind of background I need to get in there. ![]() It's going to be a beach night scene... as my conception of zombies don't much like sunlight, what with the heat and decomp and all. |

Ekobor, the shadow under the armpit and under the breasts seems a little odd. Mainly it just seems like banding. Also the skin on her right arm, our left, seems like it would hang more in that gap. I like the face a lot though.
Anyway, here's my go at it. Rather WIP at the moment, but the gist is that it's Zombie Halloween, in human costumes: ![]() Edited by Ryath - 30 October 2009 at 12:21pm |

But for now, this is where I'm at. I'm not sure I'll be able to get it too my liking for the contest. But I really like this piece, so I'll be throwing it over to the WIPs if I don't get it done in time. I want this to be the best I can do. Edited by ekobor - 29 October 2009 at 9:10pm |

if there is still musscle under the skin, then all of that skull is wrong...it would have to be covered by musscle.
I honestly think the exposed skull takes away from the image. there is no reason for the head to be at a 1 year decomposition, while the body is at a 2 week. dosent make sense |

Hey Linda, welcome to PJ.
You have great characters with a lot of personality (zombinality?) Unfortunately though, this image won't be allowed into the gallery/challenge. The latest version of this piece is over 5000 colours (!!), this is far too much for something to be considered pixel art. Have a look over the rules at the top of the page here (this is also the page where you can submit pieces to the gallery, but don't do that yet). For stuff to be considered pixel art here every pixel must be placed by hand; no tools such as auto AA brushes, blur, gradients etc... so this unfortunately means you might have to go back to your line art in your second version. You might not be able to finish it before the challenge deadline (about a day and a half), but I think you could keep going and submit it as a normal gallery piece late on. Make sure you have a look around the gallery and look at the type of art that is submitted by other users here. Also, I think you could try starting up your own WIP thread in the WIP forum where other members will be able to give you some more pixel art pointers :) |

The last one is actually a jpeg (filename = zombie 7.png.jpg), that accounts for part of the problem, but not all of it.
Besides, you now have a transparency layer and auto-aa font. I foresee trouble in the queue. The zombies look cute, but their texture is a bit random. ska: sorry for the cross-posting. ------------------------------------- Manu: sorry for invading your post - just for the record, it's neither a colour reduction nor a jpeg. It does have a jpeg extension; this may be because of the host automatically assigning a jpeg extension, but I'm fairly certain that it's not a jpeg. </post invasion> -------------------- ska: no problemo! You have a point, although there are typical jpeg artifacts at the top, and the newest version also has them at the bottom (yellowish). That would be an excellent way to accidentally get 5000 colors. There are none in the chars, though. So the whole thing is not jpeg, but I'm fairly certain the bg has been at some point. I'm not sure about color redux, but the bg doesn't look handpixelled though. Maybe I'm being über suspicious because of some bad stuff slipping past me lately. ------------ Ska edit II: Hm, I guess I was wrong (it happens! ), on further inspection and complaints from Lollige, it does seem like a jpeg (albeit, a high quality jpeg); it didn't seem so at the time. I guess I was fooled by the low amount of compression. But anyway, regardless of compression, that image definitely wasn't pixel kosher. </thread inside thread> Edited by skamocore - 01 November 2009 at 5:26am |

skamore and manupix, thanks. I think I merged in some layers that should have been discarded. I am not sure how it ended up with 5000 colors though. No biggie to start his coloring again, I was not sure I was happy with the way it was coming along anyway.
In regard to the file extension, yes the host is changing it. If GIF is acceptable I can use that format instead of png. The host leaves the GIF extension alone. So here we go again :P I threw my pallete colors on the image, some of those colors may not be used, so I will discard those and switch out for a different color as I progress. rough banding stage ![]() |

Looks good!
47 colors in the last one, including template; 56 in the previous. Extensions are ok, no .jpg this time. There is no difference between the gif and png either. There are a few stray pixels here and there on the bg: around the border, and around the tall guy's head. |

Thanks Manupix
It is quite a large canvas for pixel art. I am sure I probably missed more than those strays you found. I also had one heck of a weather related headache toward the end so actually surprised I got it to the point I did. I ended up with Photoshop saying 31 colors when I saved as GIF on the last one. With it being more of a scene than a small sprite or tile based image it seemed to me like it needed a lot of color. Especially with it depicting a photograph. Ska was kind enough to recommend a color counter for me, but I have a 64 bit system and I don't think it will work. I will note the devs though and see if there are issues with it on a 64 bit system. Thanks again ![]() |
