hellow you guys, haven't seen you in a long time...
I finally have found a little time in my bussy life to visit you again ^^ and it feels great to be back! So here's a work in progress where I'd like you opinions about! As you can see it's a cow on a hill... I focused on drawing the shape of the cow, and the rest is to get a general idea of the look and feel. So I like comment specific for the cow. So please, spit it out! ![]() [edit]Maybe it is a good idea to make the image smaller? I'm not sure if it's to big or not...[edit]

I would say definately make it smaller! Much.
The smaller it is, the more control you have.
As for the cow. At this point it is quite anthropomorphic, or, in other words, it is using much of the anatomy of a human. This might be what you are going for, but I thought I'd make comments if this was not the case. It is most prevelant in the joints. Cows' 'elbows' and 'knees' bend to the opposite of humans. This is so that when they do choose to lay down they can tuck them under themselves. The cow is also much too small in comparison to its limbs. As for the hill, the angle you have it at it appears to be sloping towards us with enough force that the cow would be sliding at us. I doubt this is intentional. I would make the top of the hill much flatter, and have it end (on the up ward part) about where that white line breaks into it. The rest of what I could say I will save until you decide whether to make it smaller as most of it would be rendered obsolete by you shrinking it. Good job, and keep going. |

thanks for the reply, I think I will resize it then, and do something about the anatomy of the cow. I found drawing the limbs very hard. But I didn't notice the problem. Most animals have there elbows in opposite directions, dogs, cats, horses...and cows.... I just wanted to thank you for the good advise, and I'll post my progress!

Agree with previous comments, about size and anatomy.
I like the general idea, but I don't get the city idea. And what are the 'spots' in the air? Foreground colors don't look like night: desaturate and darken... |

Hi everybody
Yesterday I redrew the cows limbs and I resized from 600x600 to 300x300. I also cleaned the outlines of the cow. ![]() @Manupix: I wanted to have a nice scene to put the cow in. I didn't want a regular pasture because it's boring. I wanted it to sit on a very green hill with wild flowers, very beautyfull nature thingy... and then in the back the busy city. I wanted kinda show the contrast between the busy and rushed nightlife and the peace and rest of nature... About the "spots" in the air...they're supposed to be lights (lantarns, houses, the disco,...) but as I said I just used some colours to get a general idea of the drawing... As for now I want to focus on the cow, and take the rest of the drawing step by step, if that's okay for you guys??? Edited by cele1989 - 24 October 2009 at 5:19am |

Much better cow!
Its head is probably too big, though. There is also an angle of view discrepancy: the cow looks as viewed from 45° or more, the bg from near horizontal. |

Hi,
I did a quick edit on the drawing. I've smallen down the head (don't know if it's enough though) I did a quick sketch to see if the persepective is better this way, but I still need to clean it up. ![]() As I said earlier I would like to take the drawing bit by bit. If the cow is right I would like to shade it. I sometimes have ruf time picking right colours for my piece, so i'd like some advice on it. ![]() I think I now what this desaturation thing means... Found this example: ![]() But i'm not sure how to do it. Most of the time I use MS Paint or Graphics Gale. I think Graphics Gale maybe has some things I can use, but I have no idea how... Can someone help me out? |

The head is much better. The persp is not...
Unless you want to go for a game-like oblique persp which is totally unnatural. If you want a bg with horizon and distant buildings, you don't have a choice of an angle of view: has to be near horizontal. You can't see the tops of bldgs, that would mean you're flying high! Also, even in this case, you should have a vanishing point, the left side bldgs should be mirrored, and those in the middle, somewhere in between. The solution there is (unfortunately) on the foreground... Since that implies redrawing the cow, maybe you can let it go like that for now... Desaturation: here's an edit, with the photoshop dialog box. There is certainly something similar in GG, there is in paint too. May look a bit different but the 3 settings (hue - lightness - sat) are always there. The graphic you found is not really helpful, since desaturation looks like lightening. ![]() Paint dialog box:

vanishing points in linear perspective are vritually always placed on the horizon. In neutral perspective (basically eye-heigth, and what you seem to be using) this usually means in the midle of the canvas. you are useing onepoint-perspective so that point would be dead centre in your canvas. otherwise you seem to have it down. the colours are much improved and the cow looks awesome. keep it up and this will be a killer piece

Blue is better, but a bit low. Suppose you stand on the hill: you look at the distant city from a height, the horizon if you could see it (you can't because it's hidden by bldgs, it's not the white line) intersects the bldgs at the same height as the hill. Depends on your view of that hill, I'd say 1/3 of the distance btw blue and red points. That should be the height of the vanishing point.
But, there's no reason why the city should be aligned with your particular angle of view, so the vanishing point might be anywhere on that hirizon line, right or left, and even out of the picture! In which case there should be 2 points, one left one right... But, all this is rather theoretical in this case, because this piece does not actually need persp on the bldgs. For 2 reasons: - the city is distant, so what you would see of bldg sides would be very thin anyway (1 or 2 px); 'strong' vanishing points / lines as you made them imply a wide-angle view, from a short distance. OK if the cow was lying on a city plaza. - it's probably more atmospheric to just have a night skyline as in your 1st piece. Your skyline has got better btw, it's still a bit cramped. So, If I get it correctly, you are advising me the telephoto view for this piece? And it is a good idea to make the moon smaller. I think i'll do that.
You say you would show a little horizon and the skyline is a little bit cramped... You mean that I would have to use less buildings? Yeah, my English is pretty bad and I have sometimes difficulties understanding things...So please accept my appologies! |

Telephoto: yes. In fact you don't have a choice, you decided that option when designing your piece concept. A distant city in a wide angle view would be very, very tiny. Example here.
New quick edit: ![]() I went for narrow bldg sides, but once again you don't really need any, I think. And I couldn't resist playing with light, hope you don't mind... A little moonlight reflection on the tallest bldgs, night light on the cow, radical change of foreground colors to look more like night too. En français c'est plus facile? Make sure the sky and the building borders are even darker (compare with manupix), and then start working on the cow!
