I really like the form of the leaves. Try adding more contrast, though.
The trunk is much too short, IMO. I think it should be at least 10 pixels taller, maybe more. |

Hey thats pretty damn good for a first try. I think the second one you posted though is inferior in terms of colors. Everything is too desaturated and uncontrasted. I'd go back to how you had a good saturation and luminance difference between the dark parts and the leaves with light directly on them.
Keep it up. |

The leaf canopy is really good :)
I think you need one more darker tone, probably a really desaturated purple to tie it all together. |

The canopy is looking really good! Now it'd be cool if you could give the trunk some more attention. The shape is solid and readable, but it could use two things. Firstly it could use a deep, lovely cast shadow at the top, where the canopy is cutting off the light hitting the trunk. You have some of that on the side branches but not much on the main trunk. And, like Jeremy said, using the darker shade on the trunk will help, too.
Secondly the trunk probably needs some more texture. There's some minimal texture going on, but the canopy is so vibrant and detailed and realistic that your simplistic trunk is suffering by comparison. Try getting rid of the dither-y texture and do some bark-y texture maybe? (God I sound like Lucky magazine with my adjective-y words) It doesn't necessarily have to be super rough, just enough to show us that the trunk isn't plastic.
And a little bit of work on the grass and you are golden. This looks great :D
