I know you're being tongue-in-cheek, but I'm descending more and more into the realms of activism on this subject, which requires me to be utterly humorless about it.

Even when you pirate Windows, you're contributing to usage statistics for Windows, you're probably buying non-free Windows software, and you're contributing to the general feeling that, yeah, we all hate MS but we gotta use Windows anyway, grumble grumble. That's exactly Microsoft's business model: use proprietary software, file formats, and protocols to create lock-in with end users. In fact, the Department of Justice found that Microsoft was using the phrase "embrace, extend, and extinguish" internally. It means embrace open standards, extend them with proprietary functionality to create user lock-in, and ultimately use this leverage to extinguish the pure open standard.

When you use Windows, pirated or not, you're passively condoning and accepting Microsoft's offensive and manipulative tactics. And if you use Windows Vista or 7, you're giving them an enormous amount of control over what media you can and can't consume. There is no escaping their DRM.

EDIT: and no, I don't usually lecture people about using Windows, but the subject came up and I'm always on the lookout for a soapbox :P

Custom build.. Sure not everyone knows what parts to pick but then again do those people even care if they're using windows?

I agree. I do abide to microsofts laws.

I don't think I deliver them any money, but yes, I do contribute to their system.

However, do I have another option at the moment?
I my beliefs, macs are still for creation, and unix systems for programmers.
I have worked with both, actually I work a lot with macs at the moment. But there is too many windows software that I can not replace..

Yes, I am also afraid of using windows vista and 7. Ill stick to this PC as long as I can, and I wonder what happens next.

What is your solution?

My solution? If you like Windows and its problems don't bother you, then continue using it. I'm not on a crusade and I won't think less of you.

I will, however, object to the claim that unix--by which I think you mean linux, since unix isn't really used by anyone these days--is just for geeks. It's come a long, long way since the early days, and a modern distribution with a focus on out-of-the-box usability, like LinuxMint or Ubuntu, I would happily install on my grandmother's computer.

That said, my grandmother would probably only want to visit a few web sites and check her email. There are certain things on linux that are more difficult to configure than on Windows or Mac OS, but for the most part you install pre-built packages and everything just works. Although there is, of course, a learning curve. There was with Windows, too--there is with every OS--you just don't remember it because you were brought up with it (I assume). Relevant post.

I'm heartfully thinking back at the old windows 3.11 days... If that thing crashed you ended up in MS-Dos where you would play your games etc.

Windows was just a little fashion thing back then, did it work? Not really..

I agree Hatch. I own a computer with Suse installed on it, and for a lot of people that would work just fine.

But for the rest..

I am really scared of getting vista or 7 someday :p. I wonder if I will go for a legal version at that time -_-

Short version:
windows, mac and linux are all fine, I just want/need some of the
software only windows has, for instance games.

Copyright Protection is good, pirating is bad. But the current im-
plementation of CP is bad too.

I wish large scale companies could look past what business generally
does and look for actual solutions.

Long version:
I'm using windows (7) because of the plethora of software readily
available, and because of games. I'm still experimenting with linux
(well currently not as my second PC is at my GFs because its faster
then hers) for general usage: surfing, IM, some artsy stuff.

Linux in itself is not more difficult then Windows. It's different
though, and thats what makes it appear difficult, having to learn
new things. I explained to my girlfriend how to use Ubuntu, instalL
software for it and do common actions such as connect to Inet and
move files etcetera. Took me about 10 minutes to get her up and
running.

That was not the problem. The problem was all the other software.
OpenOffice is great, but it also has an entire learning process.
3D max is nonexistant, and I find Blender to be a mess. Gimp is
nearly as good as Photoshop but it works differently. Other Adobe
software packages have all a similar layout and setup, while linux
has a lot of separate programs (aside from OOo and Koffice).

And then there are the games. I like games, and I cannot find enough
games on Linux for me to play, nothing modern at least.

I don't understand why a Mac would be better for creating stuff then
a PC. The only difference would be system stability because Apple
oversees (nearly) all equipment and software, but stability would be
important for all applications. That said Windows and Macintosh are
really close in terms of stability and performance, once their OS's
have been out for a while.. Vista sucked, now with the SP's its decent.
XP which so many adore was quite rubbish at release too. No idea if
the same goes for Mac because I've never used the latest released
version, but I've read some big issues on SnowLeopard like accounts
that get deleted, and fast hotfixes for that, so I'm assuming all/mosT
Mac operating systems have some initial quirks too.

I have no problem with windows, I have a problem with the DRM going too
far. I have a problem with, in this case, SecuROM nestling itself in my
Kernel, Unnoticed, Unwanted, Unremovable. I have a problem with SecuROM
disabling my DVD drive because it could possible maybe copy the disk.

I agree that copyrights should be protected. I'm an artist myself, I like
it that I have some rights to tell what can and can't be done with my works.
It's not good to steal, and I agree that pirating software is rather un-
ethical. No amount of saying "but I buy games anyway, now I just play more"
or "I consider it an extended demo, if it's good I'll buy it" will change
the fact that we are not paying for something we should have paid for.

That said, current DRM is doing stuff that's out of line as well. For instance
Vista checking copyrights of a video THREE times before it appears on screen,
for every frame, every beep of sound. That's a lot of wasted CPU cycles.
For instance FlatOut2's Starforce making the game run 15% slower, a considerable
amount. For instance SecuROM flagging pretty much all SATA-DVDdrives as "pirating
equipment" and disabling them. For instance Vista not letting DRM'd content from
a legitimate DVD play on a modern screen unless it supports X and Y technology.

Besides, it's not working. Hackers cracked AACS in about a week. The torrents of
new movies are now readily available on the internet. Anyone who is pirating has
easy access to movies, anyone who buys the legal DVD is risking it not playing.
It's come to the point where it is not only cheaper to pirate, but also easier,
and with less chance for screwups (if you sorta know what you're doing).

So they're in essence driving us to illegal content because it works better then
the original versions. That's not the way it's supposed to work in my opinion.
Security measures can and will be broken, you're only bothering the ones that
support you by purchasing your stuff.

This is not the way it should be. Look for a new, up-to-date market strategy.
Change the way your company works, maybe sell subscriptions to a movieservice
or music library instead of loose files. Be creative and find a real solution
for the problem.

It's funny how you say 4th OS, seeing as theres dozens of linuxes anyway, several unixes, and there's a whole bunch of proprietary and device OS's such as for the PS3, Xbox,NDS, cellphones have symbian as well as windows mobile, palmOS, etcetera.
oh also. msdos, amigaOS, lisa, xenix, sun.

I guess you could build PJOS on linux, though i doubt it'd revolutionize the world.

I'm somewhat interested in MS's Singularity, which is supposedly an all-new kernel built from the ground up since.. 2005. Should be a micro kernel instead of the hybrid kernel used from 1993 till win7(modified through the years of course but still a rather old base for a modern OS). Not sure if the fact that its a microkernel will change much, but it's good to see thay're working on a clean new system with another decade of extra experience.

Well, yeah, there is that.

But I've got this aunt, me and my brother dubbed her Jesus Lady', around this time of year she just can't seem to learn how to shut up: "Jesus Christ our lord and savior" "Jesus Christ blah blah blah" "Jesus Christ" "Jesus Christ" "Jesus Christ"

I don't mind christmas when people just celebrate it, but I hate it when people start preaching and shoving it down your throat. I consider that to be rape. Mental rape. I don't want any.

Anyway, what gets you in the Christmas-mood? For me it's kinda listening to Lamb of God, I think it was around december 2006 when I discovered this band.

ps their music is nothing like the name implies just fyi.

Do tell her during the holidays, because that's when the obnoxious behavior occurs. "I wanted to tell you you annoyed me 5 months ago" just has so little effect.

Don't be rude though, something along the lines of you respecting her choices and her believes, but asking her to leave religion out of it because there are people around that have other beliefs (but a similar love/peace/happiness mindset).

If she's nice, she'll tone it down a bit, else try a crowbar.

Gluhwein gets me festive. It's got alcohol, warmth, and nice taste. Plus it's something not commonly consumed at other times. And erhm.. oil balls:

I'll take the crowbar option. She's nice, but unless your sentence starts and ends with "jesus christ" she has hearing problems. XD

Besides, that's just one aunt, I have other relatives. They're just not AS annoying as she is, but still pretty annoying. Basically I hate christmas because everyone loves it so much.
