If you have a PS3, don't turn it on!
Apparently there's something going around, and PS3's all over the place are being effected. Everything from lost to corrupted data, to random freezes and crashes is being reported. I personally just lost all my Fallout 3 trophies. ![]() On the bright side it could have been worse, I could have lost the savefiles. All things considered, glass half-full. ![]() |

Ack... a friend of mine was talking this morning about his PS3 going crazy right as he went to play Heavy Rain. =/ I hope none of this is permanent or that's all I'm going to hear about from him for the next month.

News article are popping up all over the internet like wildfires right now:
PS3 users the world over are reporting their consoles have been struck down by a mysterious series of bugs, leaving them unable to play games, connect to the PlayStation Network, or access save data. However, the bug so far seemingly affects only older “fat” units. A series of severe issues have so far been documented, summarised below: The bug only affects the pre-Slim models. The system’s date is reset to 2000/1/1. The system can no longer connect to the Internet/PSN. Local trophy data is lost. Save data is lost. Many games will no longer run offline or on. At its most severe the machine will only return “error 8001050F.” It is not clear whether the data loss is reversible at this stage. The exact trigger is also unclear – machines have been affected globally, apparently even entirely offline units. Speculation has so far centred on PSN updates or a calendar bug. Sony has yet to issue any useful comment, though it says it is investigating. The timing and nature of the bug has naturally also reminded some of the mythical “Sony timer” – how convenient it is that older models largely out of warranty are being broken whilst the PS3 Slim is unaffected and readily available as a replacement, their reasoning runs. Others have acerbically commented that this is after all what they would expect from a free service. In any case, it seems Sony has finally caught up with Microsoft in the main area the Xbox 360 still maintained a lead – crippling system defects. I'm not even going to think about turning on my PS3 until I hear this has been resolved. Because there's no way in hell I'm starting huge games like Fallout or Oblivion over. ![]() |

Interesting. This is being reported on CNN's tech blog and it looks like several people who've already voided their warranty with custom cases are just removing and replacing the clock battery to fix it. So far the tentative answer is that it's possible the PS3 thinks today is February 29th and then everything goes haywire. Whoops.
I dunno anything about all that boy stuff but I find calendar glitches endlessly fascinating.

Fascinating? Perhaps. All I know is that if I end up losing hundreds dollars I've already investing in this thing, I'm getting ye olde pitchfork and torch and sharing my endless fascination with the rest of the world via a good old fashion mob rampage.

My friends and I rented Heavy Rain last night, and got this problem. We fixed it by disassembling the PS3 and disconnecting the battery, then reconnecting it. Then we didn't connect it to the internet when it started back up, and the game worked fine.

Yeah, I've been hearing about the battery too. Debating whether I should
do it or not, or if I should wait for Sony to pull that 'magical cure'
they are talking about. :\
Also... ![]() edit: So... um... no apocalypse? |
