![]() Topic: VERY basic help - PotPosted: 05 May 2010 at 2:17am |

Alright well I'm just starting.
I'm just 15 years old, and have always liked designing things on computers. Being 15, I'm starting to consider jobs, and would like some sort of graphical design job, and I'm taking a look and learning about about many types of design. Today I started to look at pixel art...and started drawing a pot :D This took very little time/effort obviously as I'm just trying to learn the basics such as lighting/shading. This is my first pixel art ever. I know it sucks, so I'm hoping you guys would be able to help me a bit :) How can I improve the shading? Also the edges look very rugged, I tried making half-see through grey-ish pixels to try smoothen it out, but that didn't work out so well. So here's the pot, and a link to the photoshop file, please help!

as a beginner i recommend u to take a look at these first.... especially take a look on the ones on 'clean lines' and 'color ramps'... other might be helpfull too.... there are also a lot more tutorials on pixel art online ... here, for instance
that said about techniques, another thing is creativity... a pot....., thats quite boring,.... for practice ok, but the way u made it is quite uninteresting, u should try to put 'character' to it, like some ornaments, texture, patina, etc..... heres an edit

I just made a pot at first because I wanted to do something small and basic, that I could try things like the lighting and stuff on. It wasn't meant to be exiting.
I'm gonna take a good look at how you did it, and try learn from that. Thanks for the links as well, I'll try remake it with the clean lines and better colors. |

A simple shape like this is a good place to start learning. Looks like you've done a good job shading, and onek covered most of the pixel-art specific techniques for improving it in his post. Just remember that pixel art is no different from any other medium, in that good general art skills are more important than skills specific to the medium, so don't be afraid to continue practicing on paper as well.
