I wanted to practice AA so I decided to make a 64x64 picture of a Alien.

My friend is telling me that the bold outline is what is making it look bad. Other than a smaller outline what can I do to improve it?

Bold outlines can work for some pieces. It's still to be seen if it does for this one.

But AA should generally be applied to thinner lines, for big ones like this it makes it look all blurry.

of course , if done right, aa can also be applied to bold lines without making them look blurry....
the blurrieness is caused by ur pillowshading-esque attempt on aaing them, u more or less just copied the original lineart with different tones, and didnt rly take care wether its needed or not.... for me, whenn aaing, its best to look rly rly close at the screen, so u can actually see singel pixels and how they take effect on the others...( actually thats how it should always be with pixelart i guess...)
another thing is ur lineart, if reduced to the basic colors it appears to be very jaggy (.. even with the aa it loogs jaggy, but in a blurry way...)
before u start aaing u should make sure u cleaned ur lines as good as possible, sometimes with a nicely cleaned up lineart its not even necessary to aa at all

heres an edit to illustrate (note: i only used 1 additional color for aa)
