I was playing a flash game called Doodle God, and I liked the artwork in it. They had small 48x48 icons of several things, but drawn in photoshop. So, I wanted to some things at that size.

I started off with bread and a cake. I tried not to do what i usually do, draw a black outline, and tried to avoid an outline altogether to see how it would look.

These were refs.

I really like the bread! The cake, however, looks a little wonky. Circular bottoms are quite hard to render. I think the top of the cake should be a little lighter as well, because it's somewhat hard to differentiate between the top and the sides.

Ok, I tried to edit the cake, I made it lighter, and changed the shading on the base to be more consistent with the source. And tried some kind of texturing.

Great idea to do some still life!
However you didn't choose the easiest refs. Light on the glossy cake is 90% reflection from a very flat diffuse light, mostly hides all color and texture. The bread is better, but harshly lit at an unnatural angle.
I found this for bread, maybe a bit better (although I've seen much better on posters at the local bakery).

Don't begin to dither or texture until you're perfectly happy with volume and shading.

Perspective issue on the cake: it looks thinner in front than on the sides.
