Hi folks,

I have a client who wants some simple icons for a game. No problem. However, what he really wants are vector master images that can be then enlarged or shrunk as needed and then converted to bitmaps. Also not a big deal.

However, converting the vector masters to really small bitmaps makes the bitmaps look like crap and I have to basically pixel them by hand to make them look good.

Is there any way to convert a vector image to a small (32X32) bitmap and have it automatically look pretty good?

Thanks,

Inkscape is wonderful for this kind of work (and just wonderful in general). You can set a target bitmap size and see a constantly updated preview while you work. You can also set up a pixel grid on your vector canvas so if you need a crisp line you just line up to that and you're good to go. Conversion should be pretty easy--just export to svg and load in Inkscape. You'll need to a lot of hand-tweaking, but you'd need to do that no matter what. I don't think there's anything that can automate the process for you.

EDIT: When I say hand-tweaking, I mean of the vector to perform the initial conversion. Once you've got yourself set up in Inkscape, you shouldn't have to tweak the resulting bitmaps at all.
