Remember those RPGs on the Super Nintendo? Timeless classics such as Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Secret of Mana... the SNES era is still remembered by many as the golden age of RPGs. Many people still hold games of this era in high regard, and I consistently hear people express a desire for this long-ignored style to return.

I've spent quite a while working on concepts for an RPG in the style of those games. It has a complex story, some original gameplay ideas, and of course, plenty of references and homages to the beloved games that inspired it. However, because of the considerable size of such a project, it would seem that the project is a bit too ambitious for me to handle alone.

The plan is to make the game and release it online as an indie game; as of right now, we are planning release on the PC as well as the Xbox Live Arcade. Those who help would get a percentage of the profit for as long as the game is being sold (something we would all work out before release), as well as, of course, experience to put on a future resume (something I've seen most existing companies require).

I would act as lead writer and gameplay designer, but I still need a team. I need people that will be willing to devote a good amount of time and effort into this until the project is complete (though I will be respectful to your other commitments). I need people who are passionate about video games and understand their potential as storytelling art. I need people who care about games and want to take part in the creative process.

I am looking for an artist that will use pixel art to design the game world and characters, including -
A visual style reminiscent of classic RPGs (most notably Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and Secret of Mana 3)
Backgrounds for exploration (including animated tiles such as water) and battling
Many different poses and animations for major characters
NPCs with basic animations
Enemies to be fought in battle
Battle animations (spells, status effects, etc.)
Will play a part in map design

For consideration, please include samples of one or more grass tiles, dirt tiles, foliage, and water (animated with 3+ frames if you want, but not required). Also, supply two 16 x 24 pixel character sprites (what they look like is up to you).

I understand that this may be a big job for one person, so if you think there should be two pixel artists on this job, feel free to tell me and I will do my best to get someone else to help you.

I must make it clear that I am making this game for two reasons. One, I genuinely want to make a work of art, an interactive experience that tells a good story in the bygone style of classic RPGs. The second is that very few video game companies will hire without some sort of development experience. This project is for those who are passionate about games, want to help make one, and possibly want to build a career in the field. Financial gain should not be a driving force.

Lastly, I admit my inexperience in the field. I have studied game development and interactive storytelling for a long time, so I am certainly not ignorant, but I have never made a game myself. As such, this will be a learning experience for all of us, but I am confident that with a capable team, we can create something great.
