   You can check it using the controls in front of your monitor. It's a number expressing the color temperature in kelvin degrees.

I always used to work with a 9300k (colder colors) but I heard that
6500k (warmer ones) is a more standard choice. There are websites about
this topic, and many free or commercial applications to calibrate and
profile.

Calibrating and profiling is important if you don't want that your last
masterpiece looks cool on your monitor and flat or too much dark or too
much lighten on your friend's one.

On the macs this process is easy and standard, while on pcs (xp or
linux, it doesn't matter) it requires a lot of work to get it done in
the right way. I'm still workin on it.

I wish I could afford a better monitor, by the way, cos mine sucks.

	you know, 9300 is very very VERY blue! even after i gave myself some time to adjust anyways, if you want your pieces to look good on most of the monitors, just use the most used temp. (6500) oh and for people that have an old monitor on which you cant check with the buttons on the monitor(like me) you can use PowerStrip, which is allso a nifty overclocker

	Whee! I can change my settings with the press of a button. Apparently 9300k is for 'general use' while 6500k is for 'game use'. I'm on 9300k right now and all the other monitors I've checked my pixels out on look fine and dandy.

	Actually, 6500 is better if you have to deal with printing your artworks, while 9300 fits better the needing of gfx that will always be presented with a monitor. Apart from this, the problem is that the calibration of kelvin degress could be not correct on older monitors (like mine), so that 6500 is too much warm. Right now i am running a custom setting (i started from 6500 and tweaked until i got rid of most of the warm dominant tint). It still looks a bit weird on screen, but comparing to the prints it is more accurate. ice9 / lostconnection.net
