Well I've been trying to learn pixel art for quite a while, and I have been scouring the web looking at various tutorials, and viewing other peoples work. But I am REALLLY stuck. I just don't know what to do to improve my skills. Should I read more tutorials? Should I repeat the same things over and over? Should I look at other people work and try to figure out how they do it? I really don't know what to do next.
So, basically, I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get out of this noobish loop. Maybe something that you did when you were a begginer that really helped you out? And just so you know I am in no way looking for an easy way to learn pixel art - I just need a shove in the right direction. Thanks :3 |

Practice! Nothing is better than practicing. The more you try, the higher the chance of succeeding. Pixel something. Even if its bad, post it on the WIP section and be ready to take criticism, as it will help you a lot. Some people might seem harsh, but all they're trying to do is to show you what you did wrong so you can improve.
So, practice a lot, and good luck. [: |

and another thing, try.. experimenting. Like, experimenting with different color palettes from what you usually use, experimenting different styles of pixeling, that sort of thing. And also, Practice, like what lucas said. ;)

Reading tons of tutorials won't improve your skills, only teach you theory.
Read a few introductory tutorials, then try what you learned by drawing something. Realize that you're a beginner, so choose something easy and feasible. Don't try to draw realistically, that's hard, unless you already know about anatomy, perspective, shading, color etc... , and prefer stylistic approach, it's easier. For example draw a cute monster, or a cartoon scene. Also don't draw thinking that it is your next masterpiece. Just let yourself go, and enjoy the process of actually drawing. Learn to draw not only for the final result, but also for the pleasure of drawing. To push you up, set quality targets for yourself: choose a piece you really like, from a game or another artist, study it, copy it (giving credit to the original author of course), take inspiration from it. Train yourself to see what makes their work look good, and what is missing in yours. Once you feel more confident, you can go back to more tutorials, since you'll understand better what they teach you, and apply it in your work. |
