I think this still needs touch ups, so I'm posting it as a WIP.
Be gentle, this is my first pixel post :P ![]() |

That's terrific! Is it original art by you? A touch of selout and colored outlines and its a winner!

Well, I used this as a reference http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/File:255Torchic.png
So not entirely original. I'll work on the sel out. Thanks! edit- an update. I'm still really new at sel out though, so any advice is appreciated. ![]() Edited by Uncanny - 23 April 2011 at 5:13am |

Most people on here are gonna tell you to stay away from selout. There are better methods to deal with refining your outlines.
You can find a general discussion about why it should not be used here: http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=7900.0 |

eh I'd call it shading an outline according to a lightsource. the colors used in the outlines might stray too far from black in value though and create similar problems with jaggies.

So selout is bad? Should things just have black outlines? When I was trying to soften the outline around the light side of it, I also decided to use a lighter shade of black. The straight black seemed too harsh once I got going.
Again, any advice is welcome. I'm eager to improve my skill. |

Like all pixelart techniques, they go through periods of popularity. Selout lately is out of favor (mostly because its truly is one of the hardest techniques to do well). However, well made, all techniques are good and an artistic choice. Let whatever you are making speak to you and tell you what it wants. If you smile proudly...that's what it was asking for.
If I were you I'd practice them all whenever possible so you feel good with all of them... besides, there's always the chance that its you who brings it back >.< Edited by jalonso - 23 April 2011 at 4:37pm |
