Topic: whats the view on using colors from other artists

photos/artwork and using that as a pallet. currently, using gimp pallets/creating my own but, it seem using a pallet photo/artwork from another artist is wrong/ un-original (but would be easier in using pallete ramp) wondering if this is a pixel nono? or if this is done often. i just started learning this stuff so im not sure about what's right or what's wrong/looked down upon in the pixel art scene.

There's nothing wrong with sampling colors from a photo, and in fact there's several websites we recommend that will help you do just that.

As for using a palette from another artist, that's also acceptable. It's very good if you credit that artist, but not even 100% necessary. A lot of people like dawnbringer's winning second palette from this contest.

Borrowing a palette as you are learning is just fine. Do try to learn from borrowed palettes and notice why some colors work and others don't from these palettes so that you can eventually move to creating your own.
Experiment, experiment.

Keep in mind though that colors look good with each other in specific amounts, and the balance of the colors can be changed by changing those amounts, like this-

I just threw those together as an example so they're not necessarily good or bad (probably bad), my point is just that a palette that may have been adjusted to suit one image with certain colors used in small amounts and may not look right in another image if those same colors take a more dominate role.

So even if you do borrow a palette, you may want to pay attention to how those colors were originally used and you may want to make adjustments to those colors in your own image to rebalance them.

Working with established palettes (e.g. C-64) can help you to learn about pixel technique as well :)
