So there appears to be a Pokémeme starting. I apparently have bad timing, because I've been wanting to work on a Pokémon themed thing for a while. Ah well. It's not one of the original 150, so I don't really fit anyway~
My favourite Pokémon is Drifloon, so I thought I'd make an avatar of one. However I felt like animating. So I joined the two. Here is where I'm at: ![]() What I wanted to ask for some help with is the cloud on his head. I can't seem to get it to look just right... These are the individual frames for him, for ease: ![]() I'm not sure of the background, it cuts visibility a bit on his cloud. But that might be okay. If I could have some suggestions, it would be much appreciated. Edit: I updated the images. I made some changes to the cloud, removed the black outline, shaded and animated the Pokéballoon. I'd still like suggestions. Edited by ekobor - 05 June 2011 at 10:15am |

Uhm, I hope it is alright to double post here, I am falling off the first page, and I have something else to put here...
As always, I have many things on the go; I have a hard time concentrating on one thing for more than an hour at a time, and I have a lot of free time... So I keep a lot of WIPs. I am working on this: ![]() I thought it was done and entered it to the gallery, but showtime pointed out some things that I hadn't noticed. I did some tweaking, and I believe it has improved; however I am not so happy with it, and want to improve it more. It seems I desire to make it realistic (as it is not very stylized) but I am not sure I like the direction that would take it. My palette is not ideal, and the cheekbones are not cooperating with me. If I could have suggestions on any point, I would be much obliged. Edited by ekobor - 05 June 2011 at 10:19am |

For drifloon it looks very good. I'm not good at making clouds, but I think it'd be fine to just add a small light blue shadow to the bottom of that. Other than that it looks like it's done.
The skull is also good, but needs some teeth. If you look here- skull reference -the upper jaw narrows before the teeth appear. The teeth are really only around the central area of the lower part of the skull, so keep that in mind when deciding how wide the teeth should extend. I can make an edit later, but I don't have time right now. |

another ref you may find useful:
![]() quick edit: ![]() Just as useful as any reference on google is your own skull. Feel your face (and compare what you feel to the references). The temple region is recessed, and forms a distinct plane on the side of the skull. Between the eyes, and above the nose, is another deep recession, which helps to define the brow (which is underemphasized in your pixel). The eye sockets are also pretty small in the pixel. The cheek bones are rather bulbous, and unlike actual cheekbones. Also notice how each feature of the skull affects (and flows into) the features around it. |

Y'know, the speed at which some people can put forth an edit of quality often surprises me.
I'm glad you said it first, because every time I mention feeling my face for a reference of face and skull structure people react oddly. ![]() I think I've made progress, but my love of symmetry seems to be working against me once again. However, thank you both for those references, they are more effective than the ones I was using. I heard once that the zygomatic arch would give me trouble as an artist. I am finally understanding this. Thanks for an idea of a more contrasted palette, cure. I think I may try pushing it further than I have. The teeth I have made feel too mole-like, I am going to try and fix that... Could I ask for reevaluation at this point? |

Nice improvement. Lemme try an’ nitpick. The mouth area seems a bit odd (perhaps that’s what you meant when you mentioned the mole teeth). Notice in the ref I posted how the line formed where the teeth meet the maxilla is more or less straight, whereas yours has a deep downward curve, which gives your skull a somewhat goofy expression. The cheekbones look much better, but still have a bit too much mass I think. This could be amended by making the eyes sockets slightly larger (dropping the bottom of the socket down a pixel, maybe two), and making the ridge (that is between the socket and the deep recession below it) thinner. The chin seems just a little short as well. The shape of the cranium might need a little reshaping, it seems to ‘bloom’ out a bit much (i.e. the sides should bulge a bit less).

ekobor, that is a good improvement on your original piece. I was going to give you trouble for deleting your older work that you had earlier in the thread, but I guess the images just weren't showing up for some reason.
cure, I aspire to be helped by you one day. That edit was amazing. |

Oh. I see what you mean. Yes, I changed hosting sites as I was unable to access the original one. I will see if I can get those images back online. Progress should always be displayed.
I am still making adjustments to the skull, and will return if necessary. Nitpicks are always welcomed- they mean you are closer to completion than when major advice is needed. :) {e} I believe I have corrected this problem. The first two images are as they were. I am not sure which version of the skull was first posted here, so I chose one that is reasonably close in the line of progression. Edited by ekobor - 05 June 2011 at 10:21am |

![]() I'm still playing with the colours. I feel like the teeth are better, and the eye sockets closer. The Zygomatic still seems a bit thick, I've just not liked my attempts to thin it out. {e} Piece has since been added to the gallery, probably would be better to put thoughts about it there. Thought I might make an egg for the re-revived hatching thread.
Then... I don't really know. My shading is loose, I really need to tighten my grip of contours, but I think it is okay... This is my first time really playing with more random dither patterns; I'm hoping it will help convey a pebbly, leathery texture. And I'm trying really hard to understand and use colour more effectively. ![]() My first bout of colour is decidedly awful, though I think that the first of the golden ones (the gold on the first row) is a good step. I guess I'm wondering if anyone has any reading material on and/or suggestions about colour? I've read this thread here a great number of times, along with the links therein, and I find it fascinating but I just can't seem to make the connect between theory and practice. I have a multiple-WIP thread too, but it seems as though people have stopped replying to it just because of that fact...
Anyway your art looks awesome! The pebbliness on the egg looks quite nice to me. You might just want to make the dark shading a little darker, or have more of it, because it looks a little flat right now. Out of all of them, I like the shiny golden one best too, it's just got the best colour and texture. |

I also have like 12 WIP's at the moment lol :p
I actually like the very last egg the best. It's delicate looking and when I imagine me touching it, I imagine it to be the most pebbly feeling |

I decided to look at the Luminosity(Brightness, value, etc) and play around there. I think that helps a bit with the flat look. (The three in the middle. Left most is center gold from above, right-most an attempt to get a golder rather than brown colour.) Oh, and I rounded them a bit more.
![]() I like having the multi-WIP thread for little things like these. If I had a bigger project I'd probably make a separate thread for it... I work on a lot of things kinda simultaneously, an hour here and there. It helps keep my interest from flagging as much. I only ask for help on one at a time though; trying to absorb and apply advice one a bunch of things at once would be too hard D= |
