Hello all, I'm new to pixel art. I actually made these images before I read up on pixel art. I'm a fan of the classic Doom games so I wanted to start making sprites and textures for them. I'm going to be dumping anything that I'm currently working on or stuck on here so that I can get advice. I've read through all of the tutorials here and I think I have a basic understanding of the techniques but I still need a lot of practice.
Anyways I decided to post my old stuff here for now, since there's not very much. These were all created using MSPaint but I've since started using Paint.net Various metal-like textures: ![]() ![]() A Brick Texture: ![]() Some Line Art of a Doom Imp-Like Creature, drawn by hand first. I almost died when I failed so hard at coloring/shading it later. ![]() Note: I am not, by any stretch of the imagination, good at drawing things on paper. I just studied some anatomy lessons and made a crude outline. I gave up soon after because I couldn't get perspective right. I'm picking it up again and I'm promising myself that I won't give up this time, because I love pixel art. I have to many hobbies: programming, game modding, writing, art. It's time that I pick one and stick with it. The current problem I'm having right now is... I have no idea what to draw. I'm also pretty stumped when it comes to color selection. the creature's proportions need work. the upper body is way oversized, neck is short, shoulders are ridiculously large, forearms are puny. use references if you aren't already (and check relative sizes of things more closely if you are)

I'll see what I can do about the forearms though. Would you recommend that I stop messing with proportions until I understand them better? Or is it okay as long as I've done it intentionally? I'd recommend the former.
It's best to stay away from extreme rule-breaking on anatomy until you've really got a solid hold on the human anatomy. there has to be a method, a logical set of rules the artist intuitively uses when he makes such stylizations. every muscle is affected, and there must be a sense of harmony in how they are affect, which yours lacks. A big brutish guy wouldn’t just have large shoulders, all of his muscles would be pretty big. One doesn’t need a shoulder that big to swing an arm that tiny. The shoulders are strange because all the muscles around them are small His shoulders wouldn’t be twice the size of his pectorals. His trapezius muscles and biceps would also be massive (I can’t even see any bicep). His ribcage is incredibly large compared to his pelvis, and that scrawny lower body would have a difficult time carrying the weight of the upper half. |

Thanks, I honestly didn't put any thought into those details when I drew it. O_o |
