I have been spriting for a little while now but all of my pieces have been in solid colors or involved some one tone shading. I have been trying to create a technique for shading but it just seems off. Heres my latest piece:
edit: I through some ears on him just for the heck of it:
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Edited by vinsin - 14 August 2011 at 2:23pm |

Hi vinsin!
I think your shadows and highlights are a bit too close to your midtones. That's not what you want. You want to start adding stark, contrasty shadows, and highlights that tend towards a very bright shade. Pick a spot where your light comes from, and calculate in your mind's eye where the shadows would be cast. Think of everything as 3D geometric objects, and you'll be there in no time. ur shading very decently here and dont really convey form.. ur more or less just repeating the outlines with brighter tones...
block out the basic shapes, dont be afraid of shading and to splash big patches of color /shades onto it , just basic at first and then refine more and more... also .. as neofotistou said, use more contrast heres a quick edit i did...
firstly trimmed it down to the basic colors then blocked in basic shapes (i was literary blocking them in with the rectangular markquee tool in photodshop...) refined it a bit changed the colors a bit to make the ramps less linear and at last some really basic selective outlining (which can best be described as shading the lineart...) (also i shifted his chin forward because it looked awkward to me being behind his chest) Edited by onek - 14 August 2011 at 7:02pm |
