How would you go about shading this?
![]() I'm trying to avoid pillow shading, but it isn't working. Any suggestions? Feel free to edit it and show me your technique.

This looks great. Although I think you'll learn more (and get more replies) if you look up some references (just use Google images and search for dresses and skirts) to try to imitate the folds in the fabric.
It's a lot better when you try something and people suggest improvements, rather than just saying "Now, can someone do this for me?" |

First you would determine a light source, then you would shade accordingly. ;-) |

![]() Here is my attempt, I am not very satisfied and I am wondering if there is a way I can shade it better?

That's a good start, but what you've done here is shaded the dress as a whole, ignoring the creases. Where you've put little creases in the dress, you need to treat each of those sections as seperate objects, but still with each one getting lighter as you get closer to the lightsource.
Hope this helps. |

That looks great! Well done!
Are you going to keep going and shade the rest or leave it like this? |

You are obviously a Syosa fan so check his gallery for lighting and 'shape building' visual aids like this one
![]() Someone else who works in this 'style' is new member Naguri This is great shading, specially the large girl, but notice the smaller ones convey enough form with just a single color. Edited by jalonso - 06 September 2011 at 6:19pm |

Thank you so much for the encouragement guys! I'll be sure to finish her up and post her.
Also @jalonso: I enjoy Syosa's work, but that does not mean I am trying to emulate his style. Pastels and female models are common amongst thousands of artists. This 'style' you are trying to classify is not exclusive to Syosa or Naguri. Thank you for the references though. |

I didn't mean it like that
![]() I said 'obviously' because you made a fool-me entry where Syosa was your subject. I understand that neither Syosa nor Naguri own or invented the style but I also did not have the time to google refs for you and those were an easy find to visually illustrate not just a point but also to serve as encouragement in the good work you were already showing... I apologize...carry on. |

Looks great, MagicKoi. Now, I'm not sure what kind of dress you were going for. Now it looks kind of puffy. If that was what you were going for, it looks great :)
I just made this edit to compare it with a more normal dress shape, where the fabric isn't so heavily folded. Not sure if it helps. ![]() Edited by CELS - 07 September 2011 at 4:15am |

I have never seen a dress that shapes like it is a fixed piece of plastic CELS, I think Magic has been doing a great job on making it look very natural!
@Magic I am not sure if you should be adding so much dark pixels at the bottom of the dress, it is not as if it is folding in towards the body much right? For the rest, it looks great! |

Well, skirts come in all shapes and sizes, so maybe I'm talking about a different kind of skirt than what MagicKoi wanted to draw. Here are some pictures to illustrate the shape I mean, just for the sake of discussion.
Skirt 1 Skirt 2 Skirt 3 Skirt 4 Skirt 5 Skirt 6 Twirling skirt But yeah. All shapes and sizes, so never mind me. I do agree that MagicKoi did a good job. Edited by CELS - 08 September 2011 at 10:33am |

@jalonso:
![]() @Hapiel: Thanks Hapiel
@CELS: I was trying to go for one of those really fluffy skirts in the medieval times that had all the fluff underneath it. She is also wearing underarmor so I guess logically that would give her more bulk under there.

Here is my latest update: ![]() I fixed her dress and changed the color of her armor. I'm not sure how I feel about the bow.

I too miss the contrast on the skirt. However, the new shape of it is better IMO. I like the silver armor better. To me, it compliments the blue skirt. Maybe you were going for some contrast in armor and clothing? You did an excellent job with the piece overall. It's just my opinion that the skirt with a bit more contrast was better, as well as the silver armor.
Oh, and I like the bow! ![]() |

Thank you, and I agree, the contrast in the skirt made it better. ![]() I think that the silver amor compliments her overall appearance, but the gold armor is much more attractive to the eye.

Turned out well I see. Only thing I can complain about is the anti aliasing on the outlines. Its not done "right" and because of that looks weird. Like if a cookiemonster ate a few pieces out of the bow
![]() all in all I really like it. Maybe a bit too much blue for my liking but cant twist about taste. As you can tell because I liked the golden armor / brown armor better while MR Special didnt. ![]() Conclusion: Good job and try to be a bit more carefull with anti-alias on outlines! ![]() |
