How do you guys generally go about AA'ing a piece? What I do is go to 100% view and look for spots that need them. Then I zoom in, place maybe 1-3 pixels of AA or so, then go back to 100% and see if it achieved the desired result. I feel my method is really bad and unproductive. Is there some deeper strategy to it, or just something you get faster at over time?

I never work in "100%" as Grafx2 allows you to work in nifty X2 or X3 resolutions/pixel-size modes. At these sizes you can (always) clearly see the individual pixels (as in where AA is needed) but still have a good overview of the image. I would still zoom in for the actual drawing though, but you can quickly zoom in & out with the mouse-wheel and move around the image with the arrow-keys so it's a pretty smooth process.

Best is to have 2 screens, one that shows the tiny size and one where you are zoomed in??

Of course, that goes without saying. That's standard in every decent paintprogram (my points were on top of dual-view) :)

You get faster with experience, by not needing to zoom out to get a general view.
It's quite mathematical : If you replace a black pixel AND an white pixel by two grey pixels, you keep the shapes balanced, no need to check. A larger view is only needed when your AA decisions are going to change the balance. |

I didn't know you could have a second screen that showed an 100% view while you worked :O !
@yrizoud, I can understand what you mean, but I still haven't properly grasped where exactly the AA will be most effective. I always try one way, then perhaps move a pixel or so in one direction etc. |
