I pixeled this a good while ago, and I figure now is a good time to post it up:
To be clear, does #3 have banding?

Definitely.
There are other issues too. Mostly, the palette is unbalanced in both values and hues, so that it's far from optimal for AA. It's important that the tones in your color ramps have a regular increase in value (brightness) from darkest to brightest, that's more important than having many.
Shift hues more too, many reds are the same with just a different brightness. Try to bridge between reds and neutrals, with some purplish/brownish stuff that you'll be able AA both red and black with.

Alright, edit on the way, thanks!

(I pixeled this with a program on the DSi that I was trying out, and so mind the colors...)

*EDIT* Done:

And yeah, I was thinking it had banding.

you still have banding on the line that splits the white from red.  Why do you have the color you used for the shadow banding against this black line?  At this size, it doesn't even come across as a shadow there, just a banding problem.  The hue shifting is too minimal to notice; your whole edit is hardly noticeable from your old versions.

kinda odd that the central line is perfectly straight, rather than slightly curved. seconding the banding comment.

Center line is much better, although could still improve a bit on the white side. You mostly still need much darker / better AA on the lower half: there's far too much tonal distance between the black (value = 0) and the next darkest shade (66).

How about something like this?

-thinned down the center line a lot, yours is a pretty thick shaded belt instead of a thin division
-used lighter outlines to simulate a thinner black line
-made eyes more like angry triangles
-tweaked colors a bunch: less bright, more pastel, smoother ramps
-larger highlight

Yeah that's quite a bunch nicer. And angrier. I think the black outline is a bit too strong though, it kinda jumps out.

Well guys, I'm completely satisfied with this now, and I've learned a very good bit about colors and shapes here (sounds like something they say at the end of a children's cartoon), and I think I'm going to submit this now.

I'll give thanks to each of you guys in the description!
