this is my first semi-finished attempt at pixel art, a street scene i put together in a few hours over the course of a week. i wanted to make a lo-res/obviously pixellated image to use as the cover for my facebook timeline, hence the dimensions. cover image measures 851*315, so i reduced it by a factor of 5 to get a resolution of 170*63, but i'm posting it here zoomed to the scale that i intended it to be viewed at. any and all thoughts and comments appreciated. thanks!

edit: i should add that i do see this as a work in progress, there are quite a few things i would like to change or tweak, but i'd like some outside perspective before i do.

The bricks and stone work in the wall seem flat. Maybe add a slight bevel Also the graffiti looks more like stickers than paint. It might help to add a brick texture to that as well.

added brick texture to the graffiti and lightened the mortar between the bricks a bit. don't know if i can bevel the bricks without losing something as they're only three pixels tall to begin with.

Don't save as jpeg or any other lossy or redundant format. PNG or GIF only.

I can't see the second image but the issue with the graffiti is that it's too bright against the dark wall.

Lower the saturation and tonal value so the graffiti isn't so bright. Also the pavement itself could use some texture- cracks or just general texture would be cool.

I like the design of this piece, and it's looking good already. I'm no one to judge, but I think that you can have more variation in the palette. This method is called "hue-shifting", and involves changing the hue slightly (or greatly, depending on what you're after) to create a palette. You can read more about it in this post.http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11299&PID=139392#139392

thanks guys! i took some of your advice, lowered the saturation on the graffiti and added some texture to the bricks. also changed the color of the mortar, tweaked the newspaper machine a bit and adjusted the shading on the trash can to be a bit more in line with the shadows from the phone and newspaper machine. what do you think?

changed the shadows a bit more and made the newspaper machine look like a real vending box and less like a washing machine. =] also playing around with AA on the pavement but i'm not sure i like it much. might also add some single pixels of the next darkest shade for texture on the sidewalk, but i'm worried about it just looking noisy if i do. opinions? feedback?
