I use both. Sometimes on the same piece. I have plenty of tools for the job (100+ pens & a full set of mechanical pencils & leads & charcoals) though i stick with a black ballpoint and 2b mostly :P

I've drawn the last two episodes of my Black Hole series entirely and directly with pen. It's just a cheap biro, but its perfect for what I want. It allows me to control the boldness/thickness of the line without bothering with any messy pencil rubbin' out. I've experimented with various methods, and my current one is by far the most effective. I also value the computer (even MS Paint) as a formadable friend to hand drawing. I edit many of my hand drawn cartoons using paint or graphics gale. Clean up this, rub out that. It's nice to know you can always save things incase you stuff up! I'd like to work a bit more in Photoshop, but I simply haven't yet. And Pixel Outlaw, I've seen far more pointless topics! |

MS paint doesn't have pens.
I use pencils in the real world or whatever they call it these days.

I use a variety of media.
My favorite is graphite, mos def. I use a range of types..from 6H - 8B, Ebony, woodless, colored Prismacolors, oil pencils, watercolor pencils, charcoal, and pastel pencils. Also, I'm fond of using charcoal (vine/willow/compressed) and pastel (Nupastel by Prismacolor are by far my absolute favorites). As for pens, they're great to doodle with in margins while taking notes in class (a habit I've been trying to kick for the past decade or so, but simply cannot). Faber-Castell makes these great sketch pens/markers, actually. They've got india ink in them, so they're quite vivid and do a great job for inking pictures on bristol board (so in love with that paper). I have to stop now...I might talk for hours on art supplies...oh, I can't wait until the new semseter starts..back in the studio again. :D (figure 2) |
