Yay another off topic thing!
Ok i was wondering who prefers pens and who prefers pencils. I like pencil to draw because I draw really sketchy. I know however, that some prefer pens to draw with what do you use? This is admittadly pointless but I was just wondering.(and none of that both crap.)

So what do you use and why?

What ever is in my hand at the time.
I love to sketch, I don't care what it's with.

I use both. Sometimes on the same piece. I have plenty of tools for the job (100+ pens & a full set of mechanical pencils & leads & charcoals) though i stick with a black ballpoint and 2b mostly :P

Lol nice! I bet you have a huge professional set that has like 20 fold out compartments and special locked drawers. Different strokes for different folks I guess.(That tool box might be fun to pixel.)

I've drawn the last two episodes of my Black Hole series entirely and directly with pen. It's just a cheap biro, but its perfect for what I want. It allows me to control the boldness/thickness of the line without bothering with any messy pencil rubbin' out. I've experimented with various methods, and my current one is by far the most effective.

Pencils are still good for sketching- especially if youre working from life, and you need to create form quickly (before the model loses their pose!).

I also value the computer (even MS Paint) as a formadable friend to hand drawing. I edit many of my hand drawn cartoons using paint or graphics gale. Clean up this, rub out that. It's nice to know you can always save things incase you stuff up! I'd like to work a bit more in Photoshop, but I simply haven't yet.

And Pixel Outlaw, I've seen far more pointless topics!

I use a variety of media.
My favorite is graphite, mos def. I use a range of types..from 6H - 8B, Ebony, woodless, colored Prismacolors, oil pencils, watercolor pencils, charcoal, and pastel pencils.

Also, I'm fond of using charcoal (vine/willow/compressed) and pastel (Nupastel by Prismacolor are by far my absolute favorites).

As for pens, they're great to doodle with in margins while taking notes in class (a habit I've been trying to kick for the past decade or so, but simply cannot). Faber-Castell makes these great sketch pens/markers, actually. They've got india ink in them, so they're quite vivid and do a great job for inking pictures on bristol board (so in love with that paper).

I have to stop now...I might talk for hours on art supplies...oh, I can't wait until the new semseter starts..back in the studio again. :D (figure 2)
