Hi Guys,

I joined up to Pixeljoint some time ago. Initially, I had a crack at a couple of images but never really got very far. Recently I've had the urge to start mucking about with pixels again - so here I am!

I'm trying to start fairly simple - as you can see by the image below. I am having a bit of trouble with my shading (I'm thinking this has to do with my lack of any sort of formal art training more than anything, but hey you have to start somewhere right?).

Anyway, I'm going for a top/front/left light source. I am wondering whether it is mainly my shadow positioning or my colour choices that are letting the image down?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

You have to start somewhere, but if you're looking to learn the basics of formal art training, those are much more easily practiced in traditional drawing than in pixel art. Pixel art throws In a whole new set of challenges. I don't want to discourage you from pixelling, just know that learning the basics and practicing drawing regularly (especially from life) are essential to improving your technical skills.

The ghost itself is pretty boring. He seems to be the traditional sheet ghost, so maybe add some fabric folds in the white sheet, indicating where the fabric hangs off the forms underneath.you might also try making the ends of the arms tatteredformore visual interest. You might try googling 'sheet ghost' and finding a few references.

I really appreciate the candid advice cure! I'll give your suggestions re: the ghost a try, and will also look at some methods to improve my general drawing skills.

Cheers!
