Hello,

I am looking to expand my portfolio in an interesting way. Since I find it difficult to find sustainable work as an artist, I am looking to create a faux game presentation in order to demonstrate my pixel/animation abilities.

In order to accomplish this I would like to create animation sets for sprites and edit them into one presentation (walking>running>climbing>attacking etc) on a large, seamless background that I can pan as the character moves.

My concern with using graphics gale is that I feel I need to set/create all of the frames ahead of time (since a frame can have its own layers). Meaning that I would need to duplicate each animation cycle continuously for the entire length and change visibility to cue it up. This is the best I have come up with so far, I would love to create animation sets and be able to drop them in and transition somehow (like in maya) yet most gif type programs prefer lower res, shorter frame products.

Any advice on how to accomplish this?

I suggest you try GIMP with the GIMP-GAP plugins. It supports as many layers as you need, moving objects (animated or static) along paths, and large numbers of frames. The main thing to be aware of is that it uses the 'video' timing model: you can only show a frame in multiples of 1/ framerate of a second (24fps by default, but adjustable).

absolutely.

Hey Neota,
I have never heard of GIMP-GAP before, but it sounds like a great solution to these kind of problems! Thanks for posting this :D

I'm not familiar with GIMP but I will definitely check it out. I am nearing completion of asset production and ready to begin animating. I hope it is a smooth transition (working in photoshop now). I very much like the sound of this, however, I have a 2400x600 BG image, will I be able to move that off-frame and still retain the image (GraphicsGale does not do this).

Thanks for the info!

As far as I know that is the case, since it uses GIMP's layer system -- all off-canvas content still 'exists' and will appear when the layer is repositioned.

Some people say Photoshop <-> GIMP is an easy transition, some say hard. I have no personal experience since I've never used Photoshop.
The 'ps-menurc' is available as part of the standard GIMP package, which adjusts the keyboard bindings to match Photoshop ones.

When I recommended GIMP-GAP I was imagining you already had GIF files of the individual animations made up and simply wanted to compile them. For creating small animations I recommend it less, since it's video-oriented (undo works within frames, not across frames); I personally would opt to use GrafX2 for doing individual animations. Hope I understood your intent correctly.

absolutely.

I really need to just bite the bullet and buy GraphicsGale, but I don't have Gif animations produced yet.

If I could zoom in (if even artificially) on the scene then I think I could just move all the assets into GG, animate, then composite and "shoot".

I may just have to do it the hard way and animate everything by hand and use a thousand or so frames . yipes.

But I will definitely look into your software recommendations, I just havent gotten to that step yet.
