i have read a lot of things about AA but i still don't understand why we replace some of the outline with the buffer shade... is it necessary ? what's the theory behind it ? ![]() Edited by [VIII] - 16 January 2014 at 2:25am |

It is needed because the buffer shade is what visually softens the jaggy and the brain adjusts to read. There more on this in cure's pa thread and the noobtorial thread too.

It is needed because if you have a 1 px line and you want to apply AA it will look thicker. For this you replace the outline with an extra thick portion of the buffer shade, because of the lighter color it will still look a bit like 1px thick lines of the line color.
Of course once you start with AA you don't need to stick with a 1px line. Having a 1.5 px line (surrounded by buffer everywhere) or a dynamically changing line can be interesting too! |

a lighter shade line appears thinner than a dark shaded line ,so this is why the replace some of the outlines with the buffer shade to trick the brain and controle the thikeness of the line, like Hapiel and Jalonso explained
