I'm a total newbie.  I'm making tiles for my background using Paint.NET (I'm on a PC).  I'd like to know how to quickly and efficiently check if the texture tiles correctly.  Here's what I do right now, and it's very inefficient:

  1. Expand the canvas 2x.
  2. Copy and paste the tile in the blank spaces so they overlap.
  3. If they don't, touch up the image.  Copy 1/4th of it and undo my changes back to step 1.
  4. Paste what I copied to overwrite the canvas.
  5. Repeat

Is there a quicker way to see if your image will tile correctly, especially in Paint.NET?

Try using tiled, is specifically designed for that you do.

A common system (available in some painting programs) is to scroll the tile while wrapping at edges. This seems possible in Paint.NET too :

edit: Even more results if you google "seamless paint.net"

yrizoud: thank you, that seamless paint.net plugin will probably be very helpful in some situations.

I think in other situations, it would still be preferable to be able to say, "Show me what this looks like when it's tiled". Any idea on what could efficiently do that?

Such basic functionality as tiled view and wrapped editing shouldn't be so rare but the only image editor I can think of that has it is Blender.

Pixothello is rather well known for it (and has a few videos of explanations)
Pyxeledit is a very recent editor that's designed for tilesets (not free, but very cheap).
Grafx2 v2.4 also has the feature ("Tilemap mode").
And of course Cosmigo Promotion.

Thank you yrizoud.  That's exactly what I needed.
