I seem to remember there being an excellent program for drawing repeating tiles where you drew in one frame and a set of tiles showed in another so that you could see how well they linked as you drew. Is anyone aware of such a program?

Pro Motion, GrafX2, Pyxel Edit all do this.

Great, thanks. I've been using Graphics Gale, but it doesn't have a function for repeating tiles that I'm aware of. I'll give those others a look.

I'm not finding the exact tool I was looking for in any of those three programs. I might not have explained it well. I thought in the past that I had seen a program where you could edit a single tile in one window, and in another you could see a 3x3 gird of that one tile repeated 9 times so you could see how it would link up with itself if used it in a game.

Did I not look under the correct settings or am I thinking of a different program? I do see options for creating tile sets, I just don't see an option to show a grid of just the same tile as it would look pasted next to itself in a 3x3 grid.

I think I remember an utility made in GameMaker or Multimedia Fusion. I checked videos of Pixothello (Which is known to be a veteran in tiling graphics), but it doesn't seem to be this one.

In which program are you searching ? As said above, GG has nothing like this, while ProMotion, Grafx2 and Pyxeledit all DO let you draw "in" one tile and see the result repeated on all occurrences of the same tile.

They let you do stuff like this:
(by Arachne)

If you want to see a 3x3 grid, then just place that on the canvas.

Personally I'd like to see a display/edit toggle to fill the canvas with the currently edited tile, but none do that that I'm aware of.

Alright I'm starting to get how to edit a tilemap in Pro Motion. It'll take some getting used to but this may be what I was looking for. Is anyone aware of any tutorials made for this program? I'm reading the online documentation, but that's more general. It does look like a powerful tool though--when you edit one tile, the rest of its instances do change as well. I was able to put together a map that looked like Kid Icarus, but I have a lot left to figure out.

There are no tutorials that I know of, or at least none that go into any real depth, but the in-program help is very comprehensive.
