Well, I just got done failing in a game jam (im a programmer), and it made me really want to get good at pixel art, so I thought I'd swing by here.
Here's a screenshot from the game, and as you can see my pixel art sucks. I was wondering if I could any helpful feedback and criticism, and perhaps one of you more experience pixel artists could point me in the right direction? Thanks :)

Well, there are few big things.
The biggest one is lines.
On your foreground there are objects with lines (crate, horseshoe, ground) and there are objects without it (cowboy, birds). Just add some line to cowboy and birds, it will be good.
And on the background mountains have a 4 pixels line which is really much. if you delete mountains lines for good, they will look more background-ish.

Well as far as bad art goes, at least it's clean. (I guess being a programmer shows there, huh?) The background looks like a rush job, but you've got clean lines on the horseshoes and tileset.

How much artistic knowledge do you have in general? Ever had drawing lessons with pencil? Teaching artistic ability is trickier than teaching someone to be neat, but it's possible. It'll be a bit longer ride though. And it'd help if you are young; more flexible brain, and less bad drawing habits.

Right now I think you should focus on two main things: 1 - shape and form, making stuff read well and not feel flat
2 - a style. Are there any games you like the art of? If you collect a bunch of reference you can try to emulate that.
