Hello!
My submission has been recently rejected and would like to know why :
I know it's not 100% pixelart, but it's closer to pixelart than pretty much any other art style. Thanks! |

To put it bluntly, because it's not 100% pixel art. ;)
PJ does not accept any work containing non-pixel art elements. I would start by losing the npa font, getting rid of the background, sizing down the canvas, and limiting your number of colors and reworking any tooled spots. Edited by W M - 26 January 2015 at 1:18pm |

I feel like I'm in-between 2D/3D "normal" graphics design and pixel-art, so I have no idea where it would fit. My ultimate goal would be to draw sprites of this quality (from the MMORPG Tibia) : ![]() Edited by Lorty - 26 January 2015 at 1:50pm |

What you have here is hybrid pixels at best and lazy pixelling at worst.
That ultimate goal of yours is achieved with pixelart and maybe even better than that in quality. Don't think of this as bummer. Work to improve and make pixelart and it will make you a better all around 2D/3D artist. |

This is by Adarias one of many pixelartists that prove pixelart when clean and pure is better than hybrids for these smaller icons.

I'm not quite sure if I understand it well... the 6 sprites I linked where I said it was my ultimate goal would be "pixel art", but my submission would be hybrid pixels? Or are they both hybrid pixels? And I don't know, these swords from Adarias, they aren't that great. I mean, in theory, it's great, but it looks off. Perhaps it's the lack of solid black outline? I don't know... again, I prefer this so called "hybrid" style :
I still don't know why they can't be classified as pixel art, though. Some shading/highlighting tools might have been used, but most of the pixels have to be fixed afterwards anyway. The tools don't create the object, they help you get a bigger range of colors to get that realistic feel. All the details are still made in pixel-art form. |

Pixel art, in essence, is all about control over the individual pixels (hence the name) and it is how it is differentiated from other digital mediums and standard digital painting where the artist will brush over the canvas with little care over the effects on the individual pixels. If you are drawing a piece of pixel art and you place down a pixel(or even a few), you should be actively aware of why its there, its specific color and how it affects the piece in general. Someone should be able to point to a cluster and you should be able to say "Yes, I picked out those colors with the intention of doing x and I drew it in this way and put these pixels here to do y." This is often why you see color count stressed so much in this medium since a lower amount of colors helps you to control the piece. It is why there is a space for color count under the submission form and why most highly acclaimed pixel artists thinks a piece with 19 colors is better than one with 190. When doing a piece of pixel art, you should be able to return to the piece if you want to edit its subject and edit it with a few brushstrokes, editing the pixels themselves and not as a whole section. Its fine if you wan't more "realistic" looking sprites and you opt to go for a hybrid style. Just know that it isn't considered pixel art. Besides, it isn't as if standard pixels can't accomplish what you want ;)

I have to agree with Yaomon17, even looking normally at the sets you posted Lorty, you can see a diffused noise in the piece, they clearly were scaled and sharpened to look more interesting. Just to let you know, in the history of Pixel art when the first computer with 256 colors came out, everyone got crazy about using every possible color, but as you can see most serious pixel artist still stress about color count and rarely go beyond 32. That's because Pixel art is all about control and being able to give the max detail and balance to a piece.
I can understand a pro, because he needs to cut corners to meet the deadlines... but you'd not want your own work like that if you can. Note: The fourth item set is from DB, damn I love that set, nearly unbelievable how he use he's palette. |
