Hello, my name is Iuri Fiedoruk (protoman@upperland.net) and I develop a game called Rockbot, that is a kind of free-version of Megaman, witch comes with an editor (for levels, enemies, players and more). I am looking for artists to improve graphics for the game, as I'm more a software developer than artist :)
![]() Game Story: While Megaman takes place in Tokyo city, Rockbot happens, during the same period, in Kyoto city, where a university professor decides that his city also need inteligent robots to help the police to protect the city. When he has just finished Rockbot, the second robot (the first one is a prototype called Betabot), a mad scientist attacks the security force with 8 bosses (Ape, Daisie, Seahorse, Techno, Mage, Mummy, Dynamite, Spike), and even without being tested, both Rock and beta will have to go to the fight. Game Style: The game is based highly on old style Megaman games (1-6 and 9 and 10), but is meant to be free (open-source). For now I'm using graphics taken from other games, but the idea is to replace them completely for free graphics. Homepage: http://rockbot.upperland.net Current Graphics: http://sourceforge.net/p/rockbot-game/code/HEAD/tree/v1/build/data/images/ Color Palete: http://sourceforge.net/p/rockbot-game/code/HEAD/tree/v1/build/data/nes.gpl (this is in gimp format, as this is the editor I use on my Linux box) Job Description: What I need most is help with the tileset (http://sourceforge.net/p/rockbot-game/code/HEAD/tree/v1/build/data/images/tilesets/default.png?format=raw), as it is just plain and copy from games such as Megaman and Duck Tales. I'm willing to re-edit the stages if needed, don't worry much about preserving tiles position if needed, also you can use the editor yourself (Linux and Windows) while creating graphics in order to test (the images are in plain png format in the game data directory, you only need to preserve the color palete). Also enemies sprites or improvement over existing ones, would be much welcome. You can see screenshots of the stages here: http://rockbot.upperland.net/?page_id=548 If you need more information, please ask. Edited by protomank - 04 May 2013 at 9:10pm |

I was drawing a Mega Man-style Stage Select Head.
At first, it was just a bot head. But I added some pupils and BOOM. So I looked up any Mega Man-ish projects on here. And I have to say. I like your's the most. ![]() This is just a test picture. I could re-draw it if you would like me to. My Deviant Art Picture Page I hope you reply soon. :) |

Hey, thanks a lot.
It looks cool, but the colors need to be adjusted to be more NES-like. Here you can find the one I use: ![]() Also, do not use JPEG or use zero compression, as it will create a noise in colors. I like to use PNG format. I did a quick editing of the head, first converting to my pallete, secondly trying to use colors I like more and third by trying to keep your colors but in a less strong tone (strong colors used together are not common in NES games). Take a look: ![]() |

Dude! I love what you did with the colors!
Also, I sent you a message on Facebook, I believe it's in the "Other Folder". I drew an enemy as well. I hope I can help with this game. More art [A little blurry."> It is kind of a mix-mash of two enemies. If you need me to dray anything, just list it/them here. :) |

Also, I'll be sure to use your colors from now on.
My pixel art has [so far] been aimed towards 16-bit. I like the NES color pallet. :) |

You can see some examples of Rockbot art here:
http://sourceforge.net/p/rockbot-game/code/844/tree/v1/build/data/images/ Some are propetary (from Capcom) and need to be replaced by new art, I hope you can help me doing that :) |

Show me a list or picture of the enemies you want replaced. Or, new enemy ideas.
And I'll make some new ones; similar or different is up to you, the programmer. ![]() P.S. Does this mean I got the job? If so, we can talk about the job details some more after I make some new art. At your request. Any comments, questions, or requests? |

Sure thing :) I need some bosses for final stages. I'm currently using graphics from other games for those. 1. One form of tank/ballista: http://sourceforge.net/p/rockbot-game/code/844/tree/v1/build/data/images/sprites/enemies/ballista_bg.png 2. This one is meant to be something technological or alien-like. Something like the "cube" in megaman 4 (http://www.sprites-inc.co.uk/files/Classic/MM4/Boss/FortressBoss/mm4_fortressbosses.gif) or the Circle in Megaman 5 (http://www.sprites-inc.co.uk/files/Classic/MM5/Boss/FortressBoss/mm5_fortressbosses.gif) http://sourceforge.net/p/rockbot-game/code/844/tree/v1/build/data/images/sprites/enemies/tech_circle.png 3. Some form of giant robot (like Gemini, the final boss in Megaman 3): http://sourceforge.net/p/rockbot-game/code/844/tree/v1/build/data/images/sprites/enemies/castle4.png You do not need to worry in making them great right now, create some ideas, and we'll work together to bring them to the Megaman style :) Edited by protomank - 08 September 2013 at 7:24pm |

![]() I recreated your logo. I do have a question though... It's called "Rockbot", but you play as two bots. But I do understand that Rockbot is one of them. A younger, more advanced version of Betabot. Sorta like Protoman. :) I've been playing the game a lot. And I have to say, that it has some great programming. When I work on my games, I normally use Game Maker 8 Pro. But this is amazing. Was this from scratch? I might try to draw Dynamitebot soon. I can do tilesets, but I'm more focused on Enemies right now. Ideas and such. I might draw some on paper. I'll keep checking back on this page. I do have highschool though, but I will keep working on the art for you. |

>It's called "Rockbot", but you play as two bots.
The original idea was being able as two players simultaneous (like Contra). I had this feature working before, but it was too much trouble to code the engine while maintaining this, so I removed it, for now. I plan to bring it back on 1.1 version. That said, they are both like X and Zero from Megaman X, you can play as Zero, but the game is called Megaman X anyway. Rockbot is meant to be the main character, as (SPOILERS) Beta will be departing at the end of the game to live free (as Protoman). >I've been playing the game a lot. And I have to say, that it has some great programming. Thanks a lot, its been several years coding this stuff, it is finally paying off. Still need to fix some bugs and mostly enemies and bosses artificial inteligence for the 1.0 release. >Was this from scratch? Yes. I had made some small tests of an RPG Final Fantasy like code that I was able to ran on PS2. After 6 months, Megeman 9 was announced WITHOUT PS2 support, and that made me angry with Capcom, as the game could run on PS2 easily, so I decided to create an engine for the game, where I could recreate megaman 9 (still plan to do, heheeh). Later, I found it was better if I could have my own story/graphics/game to make it trully open-source, so Rockbot was born. > I might try to draw Dynamitebot soon You can see some artwork I did, as inspiration, here: DeviantArt Art Some hand drawing Screenshots from oooold versions - here you can see two simultaneous players. >I can do tilesets, but I'm more focused on Enemies right now. Ideas and such. Yes, tilesets are kind of easy, once you have the ideas. I did it for some stages like Daisie's, but some like Spike have to be redone, but first retought, as the stage kind of... have nothing to do with it :) I have some new artwork I'm working on, I'll update deviant art later and tell you. I use a program called Paint Tool Sai for that, really easy, but I lack the skills to create poses, that is why I bought an figure of Megaman and Protoman from eBay, eheheh. Anyway, I'm from Brazil southest region (Rio grande do Sul), where are you from? |

>where are you from? [I ramble on a bit.]
I hate to say it, but I live in Alabama. I'm 15, and a self-proclaimed pixel artist. I don't really like it here. But I'm use to this region of The States. I plan to learn more about Design, namely for 2D games. I'm inspired by modern indie games, and some of the older ones. DOOM was technically an indie game. I've joined some Beta testing groups for a few games being released on PS3 and PC. Most of them are projects some of my older friends are involved with, such as Mercenary Kings. I've been talking to the devs of that game for about a year now, I made them some fan art too. I'm trying to make more friends in the gaming community. Your game is the perfect example of a retro-styled indie game. I have a few ideas for my own games. I've been trying to start an indie team of my own or, at least join one. It seems I've joined The Upperland Team. :) I bet we could find more people to help us out. I know a few people who could help... I think... I also make YouTube videos. [Link"> I thought about making a trailer for Rockbot. I do have Sony Vegas 12. I could make one for you if you'd like. :) Though this is normally stuff I record to relax. I hope to help you with Rockbot and future games. :D I've got a few ideas to help spread the word. |

I live in a place were, in the same month snows, rains flooding several cities and then is hot like summer in the winter. Seriously, just happened in the last 30 days, from -4șC to 35șC :)
I studied electronics on school, then started electic enginering and dropped it for Computer Science. All this time I was fascinated by games, both as hardware and software. SOme years ago I was able to build some test-code to run on a PSX, but it was very limited as code needed to be assembly. After I got a small test running on PS2, I decided I was going to develop games, even if not as my daily work, so Rockbot was born. It is a long-long project, but I do not intent to abandon it, ever. We need a way to share files. Do you use google drive or some cloud storage system? About the intro screen you changed, I liked your adjusts, except for the red background in the logo. I used green to be different than Rockman logo on purpose ;) |

Share Files? I use Dropbox... but I'm willing to join a service you use. :)
I didn't make the logo red, I made it orange and purple. I could change it back to green if you want me to. Also, I found this at my local thrift store: ![]() Pretty cool find, I can't seem to find any programming books on Linux, but this book has some cool things you could do with changing hardware and such. I'm more of a Windows guy, though. I do have a C# programming book, but I'm leaning towards devoting more to in-game art. :) GameMaker 8 Pro is my engine for... something cool... right now. Maybe when we're done with Rockbot, we could work on my game. :) I'm working on a alpha/showcase version of my game. I think you might like what I did with it so far. Just tell me what to draw and I'll get started on it. :) |

I want those 3 bosses I told you before, and a drawing for the Evil Doctor Skull castle would be very good. The idea is a castle surrounded by a giant mechanic dragon.

I'm working on that art for you. But while I'm working on this,
I want to show you an EXTREMELY EARLY concept I have. [Link"> I used Game Maker 8 Pro. I want this to become an Upperland game. If I could have your permission, I want to become an official memeber of your dev team. My game is not as important as Rockbot. Not to you, just yet, at least. I am working on a few things for Rockbot, which service shall I use to contact you; chat, send files, and such? Also, I am recording a few things today. Take a look here:
http://www.duelinganalogs.com/article/the-nes-that-never-was/ You should limit the number of colors to 4, not counting black & white (in the real nes the limit even included those). I did a small cleaning (too many pixels with different colors) and limit the number of colors, here: ![]() |

I hate to say it, but I think I'm too colorful for the NES-appeal you want.
I'll still do the art, but I'll leave [most of] the coloring to you. I want to tackle the Bosses first, who next? |
