Hey everyone c:
I was reading this really interesting tutorial and really wanted to try it, but I'm not very advanced (in pixel art, but well experienced with photoshop as a general thing) and was a bit confused as to how to actually do it XD http://danfessler.com/blog/hd-index-painting-in-photoshop I can see the layer set up and understand it in a vague way but, I think I need it in more of a step 1, do this, step 2, do this, sort of format, this one seems like it's about to be that way but then shows you finished pieces and it's the end all of a sudden XD it's probably very simple and i'm just not getting the lightbulb moment for some reason xD |

Indigo had a rather long thread on Pixelation about this method, at the time he posted the tutorial :

thanks for the link but it seems like random conversation there where everyone already seems to just understand it by looking at it
feeling pretty stupid because im obviously just derping out and no understanding for some reason XD what's it mean by posterise? I know it's a type of filter, but wouldn't that mean you need to go in and reapply that filter to every little thing every time you drew something? and how on earth does an effect like that help make a pixel art look? |

The original blog post gives detailed instructions on achieving this, that's why you're not getting replies - all the information you need is in that post!
If I'm understanding your posts correctly, it looks like you're mistaking this technique for a workflow, when it's actually a layer set-up. You create the layer stack(s), and whatever you draw beneath them gets reduced to the patterns and colours defined in the layer stack. You set the layers up, and then you just paint below them as you would for a non-pixel-art painting. Notice that in the instructions, almost every effect is listed as "(effect) Adjustment Layer". Adjustment Layers are a special type of layer that automatically apply effects to whatever's beneath them, so you don't have to apply it by hand. You can create Adjustment Layers in Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> (whatever effect you need). Edited by eishiya - 08 May 2015 at 9:27am |

that's actually all I needed, was someone to say simply "paint under the adjustment layers" - since in my mind I usually consider adjustment layers as things that happen after the bit that goes under them, not before. I'm aware of what they are and how they work, like I said I've used photoshop for well over 5 years, I was simply confused about what approach was being taken here and needed a simple clarification, nothing difficult XD thank you
