I'm trying several graphics programs. I'm a pixel art beginner.

I noticed that the most annoying thing is when I work in one application and move the picture to another. The reason is that default palettes are sometimes different and it is exactly what I want to do (change palettes). In some apps, there is a select nearest palette options. Is that pretty much the preferred way to adjust imported images? or is there some pixel art tradition or technique I don't know about.
