I tried editing both my approved submission and not approved one. They still appear as they did before. Do the mods have to check it first?

Nah, your versions are probably up, the site just doesn't tell your browser to re-download the images. If you hard-refresh to reload everything instead of loading the cached versions, they should show up fine. Ctrl+F5 hard-reloads in most browsers. If that doesn't work, clear your cache and then reload.
