Hi guys!

I probably not the first (and not last) who asking this question: which is max color count for pixel art? Is it limited to 8bit (which is 256). Or there may be more colors and it still be a pixel art pic. If so, maybe there is an example of an art with more then 256 colors?

I know this may sound a bit stupid, like who cares these days or whatever. But still, since I was not find an answer googling this, I am asking here

Thanks!

It depends on how many are needed. So maybe the real question is: How many colors are needed?

I know that there a “rules” for pixel art. Like, no antialiasing.
For me, pixel art is for simplicity and minimalism. So having things like millions of colors, antialiasing, gradients, shadows and other will exclude the piece of art from Pixel Art.

And I know that there always may be exceptions and I saw myself examples of pixel art with gradients and antialiasing and those was actually good looking pictures, but not a 100% old-school pixel art.

So still, is it “good” to have more then 256 colors? And if so, is there an example (can not find it)

Generally speaking, 256 is way, way too many colors. Heck, even 32 is considered a lot in most pixel art contexts. Modern pixel art is still done with narrow palettes because it's a medium focused on pixel-precise control of both position and color. Putting a limit on how much you're juggling is what makes you push what space and colors you do have to their full potential.

I feel the same way) the less - the better.

The reason I am asking this: is I am trying to make a pixel art tool (just another one) and limiting colors count to 256 will save a lot of space (I know, I know, today nobody cares about free space). It will be faster with 256 only colors, it will be just better.

But since I am not an artist at all, so I came to you guys, who really can draw things. And I am wondering: may that limitation turn you mad, for example if you realise, that tool you’re using will not be able to let you to pick 257’s color?))

I did most of my pixel work in Grafx2, which only supports up to 256 colors. For me such software is fine.

I have an unpopular opinion that reaching over 100 colors is acceptable. I'm working on a piece right now that has over 100 colors, and I am able to add so much subtle details and lighting effects. There are a lot of objects in what I'm working on though.
