I've seen hacky solutions here and there, but are there any workflow viable methods wherein you can paint using soft brushes etc, and it indexed as you paint?

Yeah, like that. I wouldn't want to deal with PS though since it doesn't have proper hotkeys.

What does 'proper hotkeys' mean? You can reassign any hotkeys in photoshop! And this workflow can probably be recreated in Krita, or Affinity, or perhaps even Gimp...
