I've spent a reasonable amount of time attempting to learn the basics of pixel art and was shocked to notice the clarity with which I could understand and see pixel art on a relatively poor computer in my work place in comparison to my home system. The cause of this clarity was simply due to resolution, 1280x960 in comparison to a much more standard 1024x768. Although I've used the full functionality of zoom tools on programs I use to create pixel art, I've relied on the 100% view as what my finished peice will be viewed as ... and I now see I've hidden a lot of imperfections and missed much detail. I haven't heard, read or seen any mention of working screen resolutions, but feel the effect they have isn't something I'm simply imagining. Is there any input on the subject that I've missed or does anyone else choose a resolution specifically because of pixel art? |

Well, to be fully sure of your results, we need more info. What kind of monitor are they?(CRT, LCD) Can both use a shared resolution? If so, how do they compare then? From what you've provided, though, it would seem that a somewhat lower resolution would work better. I use 1024*768, but also have a 1600*1280 monitor, which I couldn't imagine using for pixel pushing. |

Both CRT, both capable of both resolutions. You really sum it up when you say, "I use 1024*768, but also have a 1600*1280 monitor, which I couldn't imagine using for pixel pushing." No one seems to point out that using larger resolutions can make life overly difficult, that although the smaller pixels make good pixel art seem smoother etc, you can't see how the details are made, making smaller resolutions and larger pixels a much better working environment for creating pixel art. Just being able to properly see the pixel pushing gone into someone elses work has really helped me personally, and good work at a low resolutions looks great at higher resolutions, while good work at high resolutions looks shoddy and unfinished at lower resolutions. TFT's have a bad habit of bluring... |

i tend to use absurd resolutions on my pc (1280x1024 on 15") and when i wanna see how my final work looks like i just view it at 200% works good so far. but. not only the screen resolution matters. the work's scales matter too imho. vfor instance, on high resolution things (see my green selfportrait) i tend to use dithers faster then on smaller things. same goes for AAing and selout |
