bullet Topic: Pixel Artist - CONKA! Turn-based MP game
    Posted: 23 March 2006 at 6:54am
Right. I know that most artists don't like having their time wasted. Which is why I have waited until I have the meat of my game complete before approaching any sort of artist for support.

The game is called CONKA! It's a turn-based game which can be played by upto 4 players either the Internet or via a LAN connection. In CONKA! you play either the Red, Green, Blue or Yellow team. Each team is represented by a Wizard who is capable of casting spells. These spells range from creating units to structures. Aswell as the more common spells like 'healing', etc, etc.

Although pixel art isn't my thing, I am pretty confident when it comes to Photoshop. Which means that I have been able to design most of the games HUD. The only work the pixel artist will be involved in is: touching up map tiles, creating 'entity' sprites (wizard sprites, unit sprites, etc), and also creating the 'spell icons' which will be placed on the HUD buttons (which I have already designed).

Now, to help prove that this isn't some con, or ploy... here are two shots from the game:

The game screenshot just shows the kick-off of a game. The first Wizard has advanced out onto the water and is readying an attack on the other Wizard.

Now, this post is just to gather some initial feedback from artists. To see if anyone would be interested in helping. I'll come right out and say this now: this is a labour of love for me. I will not be able to pay any artist. I do not expect to make any money out of the venture. That said, I do expect to set up a nice website to offer the game to the public, with the possibility of expanding that to create a 'production' website. By which I mean that: all future games I make (freeware) will be put out under the same 'production' name.

I'm not a hopeless dreamer. I can't compete with the games on the market. But what I can do is release interesting and fun titles for free. And have a damn good time while doing it!

As far as the technical side of things go: all map tiles and character graphics will be 16x16. For spell icon buttons, you're look at a size of 32x32. So, to be honest, any artist that joins wont be spending a great amount of time on the project.

When I say spell icons, you can see them in the first screenshot, to the left hand-side.

If you're interested either: reply here, hit me up via e-mail (nial00@gmail.com), send me an IM over AIM (retouchedsharpie) or add me on MSN (andthecheatsonhiskeyboard@hotmail.com)

This sounds like something I might be interested in. Is there a specific style I would need to match for the 'entities', or are there any color use limits? Would I need to have if fit with the current screenshot's style, or would those tiles be remade?

There is no specific colour theme or any restrictive palette at this point. Basically, the way I'm looking at it is: so long as it fits the style of the HUD, so long as I get one artist to tackle the tiles and 'entities', they will all follow a similar style.

And yes, the water and ground tiles (etc) would be redone by the artist.

Is there any way I can contact you privately?

Unfortunately, I'm pretty digitally isolated (No email, AIM, etc.), but PMs should work I hope.

Well, I've sent off a PM. The first job would be map-tiles. Which (as stated above) are 16x16. The map tiles that need doing are as follows:
  • Ground
  • Solid wall
  • Bridge
  • Spawn point (where each Wizard will spawn)
  • Water (animated)
As far as animation goes (it's only the water tiles that need animation), they're just a series of 16x16 frames. The animation system I've coded allows for variable length display on each tile and also a variable number of frames per animation.
